In the quarterfinals, held in Spirit River, the Rimbey Spartans dusted the Picture Butte Sugar Queens 41-32 as Carol Anderson scored 13, Ronda Solomons 10, Deana Wood 8, Holly Stutheit 6 and Elaine Goetz 4. Kathy Bergen-Henengouwen paced the Sugar Queens with 10. Stephanie Kubik added 9. The Sugar Queens (coached by Rick Yamagishi, assisted by Pam Sucher, manager Linda Anderson) also included Karen Ayukawa, Denise Van Guilder, Angela Teersteeg, Karen Braun, Shari Evans, Jeannette Tersteeg, Lori Bianchini, Donna Koenen, Sherry Jensen, Lorena Tersteeg, Cindy Ayukawa and Suzanne Vogt.
The Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators crushed the Forestburg Falcons 28-24.
The Carstairs Trojans torched the Sexsmith Sabres 73-27.
In the last quarterfinal, the Morinville Wolves dusted Vermilion 35-19.
In the semis, the Rimbey Spartans clocked the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators 47-24 as Holly Stutheit scored 24 and Deana Wood 11.
In the other semi, the Carstairs Trojans defeated the Morinville Wolves 31-23 as Celeste Bazinet scored 13 and Marg Davidson 8.
In the bronze medal match, the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators defeated the Morinville Wolves 37-27.
In the final, the Rimbey Spartans edged the Carstairs Trojans 39-37 as Ronda Salomons scored 10 and Carol Anderson 10. Celeste Bazinet paced the Trojans with 14. Nadine Bazinet added 8 and Marg Davison 8. Spartans coach Joanne Susut told the Red Deer Advocate that “we accomplished every one” of our season goals. The Spartans led 9-7, 17-12 and 35-21 at the quarters and although they lost Holly Stutheit and Deanna Wood to fouls, hunt on for the win. Susut said “losing those girls really hurt us on the boards and in our scoring. But a grade 10 girl, Bonnie Robinson, came off the bench to do a fine job and played a big role in the win. And we also got an excellent game from Mavis Tkacik (a rookie), who ended up playing four positions (2 through 4). She did a good job wherever she played.
