In the last quarterfinal, the 10th-seeded Rimbey Spartans stunned the 2nd-seeded host Didsbury Dragons 62-60. The Dragons, who’d beaten the Spartans by 20 during the regular season, led 16-12 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 33 at the half. The Dragons led 50-46 after three quarters. “It was nerves … they clammed up,” said Didsbury coach Jeff Johnson. “We had good defence but couldn’t put the ball in the net, we were missing that finesse. It’s pretty tough when you’re favoured and expected to win.” Brandon Overwater hit a bucket to bring the Dragons within two with a minute to play. “It’s tough. This is something we’ve been working towards for a long time,” said guard Mark Dueck. Kevin Vandehoven paced the Spartans with 18. In the final, the 3rd-seeded Picture Butte Kings clocked the undefeated 4th-seeded La Crete Lancers 75-59 after leading 24-13, 43-25 and 66-46 at the quarters. “We knew we had a real hard-working group of kids,” said Picture Butte coach Jon Vande Griend. “We worked hard all year. … We had some terrific leaders on our team.” The Sugar Kings were also fired up from having lost to Lethbridge Immanuel Christian in the zone finals, he added. The team hit the next practice with “fire in their eyes. They came out and worked their butts off.” The Sugar Kings full court pressure wore down the Lancers in the second half. The Kings defeated Rimbey 77-57 to advance to the final. Nummi had 21, Jakober had 19, Dallin Oliver had 15 and Tyler Elaschuk had 11 points in the win.
