The Wildcats broke to a 7-4 lead but Gators coach inserted speedy guard Gary Reimer, who completely disrupted the Bawlf offence with steals for runout layups as Gershaw took command. “Gary comes in and he just picks the ball away,” coach Stuart Murray told the Lethbridge Herald. “Being the size he is you don’t realize how fast he is.” Bawlf coach Jody Watson said “our guys couldn’t handle him from the top, he worked his tail off.” Watson said his troops also had trouble handling Logan Murray, who scored 24, Jared Weaver, who scored 13. Thomas Penner notched 14 and Reimer 12. “Speed always seems to outdo strength,” Watson said. The Gators led 43-31 at the half and extended their lead to 18 in the second half with an 8-0 run.

In the final, the Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators defeated the 2nd-seeded Fairview Cobras 85-59 to cap a double in the AA level for the school’s boys’ and girls’ teams. Jeremy Wiens paced the Gators with 21, including five treys. Jared Weaver added 16, Logan Murray 12 and Gary Reimer 12. “The boys are really happy,” Gators coach Stuart Murray told the Lethbridge Herald. “They all came out with a really big effort through the weekend. We had eight players with points in the final. They all played really well. You could see it in their eyes that they wanted that banner so I knew they would come out strong.” The Gators broke it open with a 14-2 run the first half as Thomas Penner and Jeremy Wiens nailed treys. They extended their margin to 21 on an 11-0 run in the second half, only to see Cobra forward Brad Grotkowski drill three treys to trim the margin to 10. But once 6-4 Cobra forward Travis Skrepnik was lost the injury, the outcome was never in doubt. The Gators nailed six treys down the stretch to ice it. “This is probably the best three-point shooting team we’ve played all year,” Cobras coach Amos Rossworm said. Murray said “Jeremy was on fire. Once he sank that first three, he got his confidence and kept going.” And Penner was exceptional, he added. “He’s not a really fancy player, but he’s always there.” Gratkowski led the Cobras with 27. Brandon Kerschbaumer added 21.
