In the quarterfinals, held in Rimbey, the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Celtics edged the Pincher Creek Matthew Halton Hawks 65-56 despite trailing 16-13, 33-32 and 48-47 at the quarters. Michael McDonald paced Grande Prairie with 33. Derek Gaume added 16 and Clark Cronk 14. Leonard Henning led the HHHHawks with 17. Mike Cornish added 13. The Hawks also included Rod Conrad, Lane Ferguson, Barry Davidoff, Mark Heaton and Tom Desbiens.

The Delburne Centralized Trojans pounded Carstairs 62-40 as Brian Christensen scored 21, Mike Edwards 9, Brian Vocker 8, Ken Simpson 8 and Ken Smith 6.

The Hanna J.C. Charyk Hawks spanked Devon 55-46 as Craig Weich scored 22. Lloyd Penne led Devon with 15.

In the last quarterfinal, the Ashmont Falcons dusted the Evansburg Grand Trunk Grizzlies 67-41 as Ralph Johnson scored 16 and Jim Wegren 14. The Grizzlies included Phil Charlebois.

In the semis, the Delburne Centralized Trojans defeated the Ashmont Falcons 54-50 as Ken Smith scored 15, Mike Edwards 14 and Ken Simpson 12. Jim Wegren paced Ashmont with 16. The Trojans rallied from a 12-point, second-half deficit to knot the scoe at 50. Ken Simpson hit a pair of free throws with 22 seconds to play to give Delburne the lead. Ashmont tried to pound the ball inside to 6-9 Jim Wegren but Mike Edwards stole it for a runout.

In the other semi, the Hanna J.C. Charyk Hawks whipped the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Celtics 87-57 after leading 38-33 at the half. Mike McDonald paced the Celtics with 19.

In the bronze medal match, the Ashmont Falcons dumped the Grande Prairie St. Joseph’s Celtics 55-40 as Ralph Johnson scored 16. Derek Gaume paced the Celtics with 20. Mike McDonald added 16. Falcons coach Bill Callagher told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that the defensive aim “was simple, to stop number 14 (Mike McDonald).” Celtics coach Patrick McDonald said “the Hawks did a fine job of double-teaming Mike for most of the game.” The Celtics (coached by Patrick McDonald) also included Clark Cronk, Glen Amendt, Darrin White, Terry Connolly, Darcy Amendt, Darcy Smith, Mike Wong, Derek Switzer, Mike Floreani and Kent Riddle.

In the final, the Delburne Centralized Trojans clipped the Hanna J.C. Charyk Hawks 54-44 as Brian Christensen scored 23, Mike Edwards 12 and Ken Smith 10. Craig Weich paced the Hawks with 13. Trojans coach Rod Smith told the Red Deer Advocate that “this is something we’ve worked at for the past three years.” The score was knotted at 23 at the half. Smith said “the guys played a really disciplined game. No one Panicked. We came in here thinking we were the best team and we proved it.”
