In the quarterfinals, held in Rimbey, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings stomped the Vermilion St. Jerome’s Spartans 61-31. Boyd Nummi paced the Sugar Kings with 22. Murray Hanna added 10, Greg Szteina 9, Cal Sucher 8 and Don Jensen 7. Darcy Daugela led the Spartans with 8. Ron Wilson added 6 and Peter MacMillan 6. “It was probably too easy,” Picture Butte coach George Hanna told the Lethbridge Herald. “We didn’t play especially well, but it was a good workout. We ran a little bit and pressed a little bit so we could get the feel of the game.”

        The Vulcan Royals clipped the Coronation Saints 49-45 as Orville Smith scored 14, Mark Ellis 13 and Allen Gatenby 10. Gordie Stephenson paced the Saints with 15. Darcy Meyer added 15 and Wayne Thacker 10.

The Hanna J.C. Charyk Hawks dispatched the Edmonton Concordia College Mustangs 47-41 as Brian Mosby scored 18 and Audie Ward 14. Kent Holmes paced the Mustangs with 18. Pete onofrechuk added 11.

In the last quarterfinal, the Rimbey Spartans crushed the Spirit River Spartans 108-52 as Neil McMann scored 34, Dave Murray 23, Rod Palm 12, Carey Pearman 6, Derek Tona 6, Daryl Kramer 6 and Dave Huff 6. Mark Rawlek paced the Spartans with 24. Murray Campbell added 16 and Rick Nagel 6. Spirit River coach Tom Dirsa told the Red Deer Advocate that “I feel sorry for anyone who has to play them.” Rimbey led 22-10, 54-17 and 78-40 at the quarters.

In the semis, the Rimbey Spartans defeated the Picture Butte Sugar Kings 50-47 as Rod Palm scored 18, Dave Murray 16 and Neil McMann 8. The Spartans led 16-15, 36-23 and 48-40 at the quarters. Murray Hanna paced the Sugar Kings with 18. Boyd Nummi added 10. Spartans coach Duncan Prescott told the Red Deer Advocate that “we usually don’t stall and at times I thought we started too early but it turned out alright. It was a tough game, one we were looking forward to since losing to them last year (in the provincial final).” Sugar Kings coach George Hanna said “we lost it in the second half. We had a three-minute span where we played poor ball.” The Sugar Kings closed to within four with 2:30 to play but David Huff and Hall hit free throws to ice it.

        In the other semi, the Vulcan Royals dispatched the Hanna J.C. Charyk Hawks 59-49 as Orville Smith scored 21.

        In the bronze medal match, the Picture Butte Sugar Kings crushed the Hanna H.C. Charyk Hawks 78-27 as Boyd Nummi scored 16, Don Jensen 15, Bernie Loman 15, Murray Hanna 14 and Greg Sztelna 11.

        In the final, the Rimbey Spartans defeated the Vulcan Royals 79-60 as tournament MVP Dave Murray scored 18, Rod Palm 13, Reg Steele 12, Neil McMann 9, David Huff 9 and Carey Pearman 8. Allen Gatenby paced the Royals with 21. Colin Smith added 12 and Mark Ellis 11. Spartans coach Duncan Prescott told the Red Deer Advocate that “it’s a very satisfying winning thing. The guys worked hard all year and are deserving of it. But it’s too bad Picture Butte wasn’t in the final. Perhaps we should look at sort of a seeding in the future. The Picture Butte game was the big one. I didn’t care if we blew them (Vulcan) out, just as long as we finished ahead on the scoreboard.”
