In the final, the 2nd-seeded Raymond Comets annihilated the 6th-seeded Cardston Cougars 105-68 to complete an incredible boys-girls double for the school of 212 students. It marked the third such double in ASAA history. The bulk

of the boy’s squad was only on the provincial Tier 1 championships football squad. “It’s something for our school to win the football and the girls’ and boys’ basketball championships in one year, that doesn’t happen all the time . . . it’s a special moment,” said Comets coach Todd Heggie. “It’s a combination of good athletes and the will to win. It’s that drive and desire that gets them over the top.” The Comets led 27-10, 53-34 and 84-54 at the quarters. The Comets hit 17 treys, including six apiece by Grade 10 standout Jimmy Ralph and Grade 12 guard Jared Baker, quarterback of the football team, who enrolled at the University of Alberta on a football scholarship. Ralph finished 33 points. Baker added 23 and Robbie Olsen paced the Cougars with 23. Heggie told the Lethbridge Herald “we just really wanted to enjoy it for what it was. A real nice win against a tough opponent and a special moment for these kids. All season I’ve been telling them to slow down and enjoy life and enjoy the time you have here. I think that’s what they did Saturday after the game. It’s a basketball game and it can be a very special time for them to carve out some memories. … It’s unreal when you go back to football (the Comets won the provincial title there, too), most of these kids are celebrating their second provincial title this year. I just wanted them to get everything they can out of the experience.”

Call them incontestable. … Talk about playing a team over and over (seven times during the season). It’s unreal that these two teams from the South would meet in the final. It says a lot about the kinds of programs the South has. You look at Picture Butte, Ken (McMurray’s) got a couple of real talents out in Cardston and some of the kids coming out of these schools. It really is amazing. I think I can credit a lot of our success to playing those guys so much. I don’t think we could have won this without having them to compete against. My hat’s off to them and what they did this year.”
