In the quarterfinals, held in Grande Prairie, the top-seeded Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans dusted the 8th-seeded Grande Prairie Composite Tomahawks 88-49 as Mohsin Qureshi scored 29. Titans coach Rob Poole told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that “we have pretty good balance and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve been successful. Over the year, we have five guys averaging double figures. Other teams can’t rely on focusing on one or two players.” Dean Yakimchuk led the Tomahawks with 12. The Tomahawks (coached by Troy Sandboe, assistant Dennis Farn) also included Greg Leaf, Chris Trydal, Quintin Williams, Tom Whyte, Mark Kildaw, Shelby Sawatzky.
The 2nd-seeded Raymond Comets dispatched the 7th-seeded Calgary Central Memorial Rams 101-64 as Ryan Baldry scored 28 and Brody Hill 24. Rashid Gotmy led the Rams with 16. The Rams (coached by Romel Raffin) alsoincluded Jayson Haycock.
The 4th-seeded Calgary Bishop Grandin Ghosts defeated the 5th-seeded Magrath Zeniths 84-73 as Mike Henry scored 18, Mark Slade 18 and Mike O’Hearn 15. Cassio Maffia paced the Zeniths with 35. Justin Wood added 30. The Zeniths (coached by Phil Tollestrup) also included Paul Hunt, Carl Jensen, Ryan Henderson, Taylor Harris, Dustin Miller, Russell Tanner, Clayton Strong, Darren Baker and Dustin Kerns.
In the last quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded Leduc Tigers defeated the 6th-seeded Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders 99-77 as Namand Payne scored 25. Kevin DeJonge paced the Raiders with 27. Jason Lazenby added 20. The Raiders (coached by Steve Latta) also included Ryan Lamb, Mike George, Aaron Daywood, Colin Stephenson, Troy Schroeder, Mike Ing, Drew Dyck, Aaron Campbell. Latta told the Red Deer Advocate that in “the second half, we came out and scored the first 11 points and had them on the run. We cut the margin to 15 at one point but they have too much experience.”
In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Raymond Comets dispatched the 3rd-seeded Leduc Tigers 84-72 as Ryan Baldry scored 26 and Brodie Hill 24.
In the other semi, the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans dispatched the Calgary Bishop Grandin Ghosts 75-64 as Robin Judge scored 18 and Mike Marciniuk 18. Mike Hnery paced the Ghosts with 30. Mark Slade added 9.
In the bronze medal match, the 4th-seeded Calgary Bishop Grandin Ghosts defeated the 3rd-seeded Leduc Tigers 88-75 as Mark Slade scored 20 and Mike Henry 19. Namand Payne led the Tigers with 26. Derek de Klerk added 20.
In the final, the top-seeded Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans defeated the 2nd-seeded Raymond Comets 74-64 to complete a boy’s-girls’ double in the 4A division for the Titans and avenge a loss to Raymond in the 1993 semis. Mohsin Qureshi led Ainlay with 17 points. Robin Judge added 16. Ryan Baldry paced Raymond with 29. Skousan Harker added 10. Ainlay had finished (14-0) in the Edmonton senior men’s public league. The Comets hit just 5-15 early as they dug themselves a 10-point hole before rallying with a 10-0 run to start the second half and erase a 37-29 deficit. A second drought, though, gave the Titans control. Titans coach Rob Poole told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that “we were up by 11 and Raymond came out and did everything right and we couldn’t do anything right. Luckily, it wasn’t a 20-point run and we were able to take a timeout and get refocused and settle down a bit. It wasn’t looking very good there for a while. … You’re going to have hard losses (like the 93 final) and these kinds of wins make up for those hard losses … I thought the game was sort of indicative of our season. We did some great things at times, and at times we stood around and looked at each other. But I guess down the stretch when it counted we had some good stops on defence and got on the boards and got some rebounds. I thought that was the difference.”
