In the quarterfinals, held in Calgary, the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans whipped the host Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys 62-39 as Pat Cook scored 12 and Phil Bartlett 12. Derrick Dell led the Cowboys with 12. Mike Cole added 12. The Cowboys (coached by Roger Teshima) also included Darryl Golia. Ainlay coach Bryan Anderson told the Calgary Herald “we were aware that Dell and Cole had to be stopped, so we double-teamed them and figure their other guys couldn’t pick up the slack. … And it worked.”
The Cardston Cougars defeated the Edmonton Victoria Composite Redmen 57-50. The Cougars trailed 42-40 after three quarters but took command in the final frame. Ken McMurray, Tony Pierson and Kevin Molcak each scored 11 for the Cougars. Gary Quintan and Richard French each added 10. Fred Kochan led the Redmen with 22. Redmen coach Bill Renner told the Edmonton Journal that “it seemed as if we said, ‘okay, the season’s over after last week’s city championship’. We were flat.” The Redmen (coached by Renner) also included Allen Hayes, Stan Kochan, Greg Fundytis, Mayes, Hargett, Lewis Mayes, Whalen, Schuppli.
The Calgary Bishop Carroll Cardinals dispatched the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams 50-46. The Cardinals dominated the third quarter with a 17-5 effort. Dwight McLellan led the Cardinals with 17. Shawn Lehman added 13 and Mike Kasian 11. Dave Ross and Wes Steed each scored 11 to lead the Rams. Jerome Ell added 9. The Rams (coached by Joey Shackelford, managers Sharon Hudson, Dave Schwas and Robin Firth) also included Orville Smith, Darren Klovansky, Jim Kotkas, Steve Payne, Jack Lilja, Tim Gough, Doug Dray, Brad Olsen and Rob Gough.
In the last quarterfinal, the Calgary Forest Lawn Titans dumped the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres 61-58 as Daryl McKinley scored 18, Derek Morgan 16 and Bill Mole 12. Kent Timanson paced the Sabres with 18. Kerry Laberge added 14.
In the semis, the Calgary Bishop Carroll Cardinals stunned the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans 62-61.
In the other semi, the Cardston Cougars dispatched the Calgary Forest Lawn Titans 65-60.
In the bronze medal match, the Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans dumped the Calgary Forest Lawn Titans 62-53 as Darrin Getty scored 11. Darrel McKinley led the Titans with 25. The Titans (coached by Jim Rogers) also included Bill Mole, C Pabusian, Derek Morgan.
In the final, the Calgary Bishop Carroll Cardinals edged the Cardston Cougars 91-90. Cardston trailed 26-18,52-44 and 76-63 at the quarter breaks before rallying in the final period. Cardston’s Ken McMurray notched an and-one to trim the deficit to 87-84. Richard French added a field goal to trim the margin to one. Dwight McLelland answered with a pair of free throws for the Cardinals. McMurray countered with a field goal and then Julian Duerkson hit two free throws for Bishop Carroll. Gary Quinton hit a bucket for Cardston with 10 seconds to play. The Cougars scored with two seconds remaining to narrow the margin to 91-90, then regained possession of the ball with one second on the clock. “We pressed them and they threw the ball away on the inbounds pass,” said Cardston coach Clark Sloan. “We ran a play with one second left and had a guy wide open under the basket, but the pass slipped through his hands and bounced once and time ran out.” Sloan described the game as “the Shootout at the OK Corral. It was just a phenomenal offensive display.” Both teams shot 45% from the field. Cardston hit 16-21 from the line and the Cardinals 13-18. Shawn Lehman paced the Cardinals with 28. Dwight McLennan added 18, Mike Kasian 18, Tom Short 8, Rob Martin 3 and Geoff Ziebart 2. McMurray led the Cougars with 23. Cardinals coach Mike O’Brien told the Calgary Herald that “we kept running into foul trouble all season. In this tournament, we kept our fouls down and despite tonight’s score, it was our defence which got us into the final. When Cardston started shooting hot, we showed that we have a high-powered offence too.”
