In the quarterfinals, held in Edmonton, the host Jasper Place Rebels dumped the Magrath Zeniths 76-57 as Perry Williams scored 19, Rob Speers 16 and Dave Brown 15. The Rebels pulled away as their bench demonstrated their superior depth. Rebels coach Dick DeKlerk told the Edmonton Journal “they play our style. They play man-to-man defence as well as anybody and that suits our game. We ran really well and got a super game from Perry.” Ted Haynes paced the Zeniths with 14. Barry Mehew added 12 and Ron Harker 12, along with 12 boards. The Zeniths included Randy Haynes, Rod Ririe, Allan Wilde, Tom Alston, Ted Haynes.

The Cardston Cougars clubbed the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres 68-38 after leading 9-4, 32-18 and 56-22 at the quarters. Walter Armsworthy paced the Cougars with 29 points and 12 boards. Lance Bevans added 11, while Todd Wolsey nabbed 8 boards. The Cougars outrebounded the Sabres 49-34. Mike Wolfram paced the Sabres with 12. Brad Strachen added 8. The Sabres also included Brad Strachan.

The Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys edged the Edmonton M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs 64-49. Rick Browatzke led the Voyageurs with 14. Curt Blair added 14. The Voyageurs (coached by Joe Danyluk) also included Wolfgang Bechstein, Ken Haak, Ludwig Ernst, Cort Blair.

In the last quarterfinal, the Calgary James Fowler Falcons clipped the Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders 66-46 as Matt Friesen scored 19, Ray Verbeek 12 and Paul McCorquindale 11. Falcon Matt Friesen scored 11 unanswered points over a three-minute stretch in the third quarter as Fowler took command. Raiders coach Ross Cloutier told the Red Deer Advocate “that’s been the story all season, our inability to handle the pressure. We fall apart against the press. Look what happened tonight. They were good but I don’t think they’re 20 points better than us.” Bart Jensen paced the Raiders with 16. Roy Heath added 9, Bryan Ness 8, Lee Sedore 7 and Lawrence Sedore 4. The Raiders also included Willie Weich.

In the semis, the Cardston Cougars edged the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys 56-54. The Cowboys led 25-22 at the half. Ron Secretan paced the Cougars with 15. Walter Armsworthy added 11, along with 12 boards. The Cowboys outrebounded the Cougars 42-34. A scoreboard mix-up had a significant impact on the semi. For minutes, it showed Crescent leading 53-52 and the Cowboys stalled to protect their lead. But with 40 seconds to play, it was corrected and suddenly the Cowboys were behind the eight ball. They’d been employing a stall to eat up time but suddenly, they trailed. Cardston coach Tim Tollestrup told the Calgary Herald that “I felt really bad about winning that way.”

In the other semi, the Calgary James Fowler Falcons clocked the Edmonton Jasper Place Rebels 70-54.

In the bronze medal match, the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys dusted the Edmonton Jasper Place Rebels 71-51. Rebels coach Dick DeKlerk told the Edmonton Journal “we were completely flat and then we couldn’t afford to play aggressively after some of the guys got in foul trouble early.” The Rebels (coached by Dick DeKlerk) included Charlie Papenhuyzen, Dave Brown, Todd Rutherford, Perry Williams, Rob Speers, Barry Robinson, Phil Sheridan.

In the final, the Calgary James Fowler Falcons defeated the Cardston Cougars 71-54 after leading 33-29 at the half. The Falcons outrebounded the Cougars 49-27. Matt Friessen paced the Falcons with 25. Paul McCorquindale added 10. Ron Secretan led the Cougars with 13. Walter Armsworthy added 11, while Todd Wolsey nabbed 14 boards. The Falcons finished (14-2) on the season. Falcons coach Jim Watson told the Calgary Herald that “we were hoping it would be Crescent Heights and us in the final. They guys were really disappointed that they lost to Crescent Heights for the city championship and we want to prove were the best team in Calgary. As it is, I guess we’ll have to settle for best in the province. … It’s the same offence we’ve been running all year. The only difference is the guys really came through and ran it well when they needed to.” Cougars coach Tim Tollestrup said “it was like the kids had honey on their soles of their shoes or something. They just couldn’t get moving and Fowler was like a bunch of buzzing bees.”
