In the quarterfinals, held in Red Deer, the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys dispatched the Edmonton M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs 56-41 as Mike Abercrombie scored 26, Nigel Gainor 9, Solon Mah 8, James Armstead 7 and Keith Smith 7. Ben Jonssen scored 15 to pace the Voyageurs. Wolfgang Beckstein added 12. The game was tied at 20 when Abercrombie hit three consecutive buckets and Mah added another to close out the first half. The Cowboys opened the second half with another 8-0 run and led 38-33 after three quarters. Cowboys coach Wayne Thomas told the Calgary herald that “I was excited for (Mike). I’m thrilled when he plays like that. Mike only gets back a half of what he puts into the game. Besides being our top scorer, he was our top rebounder as well. … Lazerte applied a half-court press against us. We haven’t played one all season and some of the boys were unhappy about it. The kids were also quite nervous and they showed it.” The Voyageurs (coached by Joe Danyluk) also included Nick Bodnar, Brian Hollands, Ron North, Kevin Jensen.
The Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs edged the Raymond Comets 70-65. The Bulldogs led 17-10 after one quarter but the Comets rallied to a 31-27 lead at the half by dominating the boards. The Comets led 46-45 after three quarters but Doug Battershill took command of the boards in the final frame. Bulldogs coach Terry Mogck told the Calgary Herald that “we realized we had to play hard. We had to dig a little deeper to come up with that extra effort. That half-time talk really turned the game around. We went out in the third quarter and scored five points to take the lead.” Norm Richards paced the Bulldogs with 22. Battershill added 18 and Eric Duerksen 13. Jeff Hill paced the Comets with 18. Mark DeMeester added 17, Robert Heggie 14 and Mark Williams 10. The Comets (coached by Bob Gibb, assisted by Brian Dudley and managed by Doug Keeler) also included Jim Ralph, Bob McCue, Ron Hill, Don Steed, Ray Romerill, Larry Bartsoff.
The Edmonton Strathcona Lords dispatched the Calgary Viscount Bennett Vikings 62-55 after leading 16-6, 30-24 and 46-40 at the quarters. Lords coach Roy Wright told the Edmonton Journal that “we weren’t passing. We just weren’t playing well. We opened well, then their guards put on good pressure and we could never get a 10-point lead.” Roger Bergstrom paced the Lords with 14. Dave Duncan added 13, Ed Jones 12 and Dave Glover 10. Brett Patterson paced the Vikings with 22. Jamie Thomas added 12 and Tom Junkin 12. The Vikings (coached by Paul Humphreys) also included Matt Slasor, Richard Englehart, Darrel Moir.
In the last quarterfinal, the Cardston Cougars defeated Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans 72-68. The Cougars hit 18-24 from the line, while the Titans were 4-9. The Titans (coached by Bryan Anderson, assisted by Lawrie Hignell and Jerry Shockey) included Dale Getty, Rick Rosbrough, Dave Bowley, Harry Blacker, Ken Flanders. Anderson was suspended three weeks from the end of the season, so the coaching duties were assumed by Hignell and Shockey.
In the semis, the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys dispatched the Cardston Cougars 46-40. The Cowboys led 10-7 after one quarter. The Cougars led 21-17 at the half. The score was knotted at 29 after three quarters. Nigel Gainor paced the Cowboys with 10. Mike Abercrombie added 9 and Keith Smith 9. Walter Armsworthy paced the Cougars with 13. Rod Beazor added 11.
In the other semi, the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs defeated the Edmonton Strathcona Lords 78-71. The Lords led 18-17 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 33 at the half. The Bulldogs led 54-46 after three quarters. Doug Battershill paced the Bulldogs with 26. John Tilleman added 25, Scott Newton 15 and Norm Richards 14. Ed Jones led the Lords with 21. Roger Bergsman added 17, Lowell Neumann 15 and Dave Duncan 13. Lords assistant Art Uhl told the Edmonton Journal that “we played terrible and won (in the quarterfinals). Then we played well and lost. We just played a different team.”
In the bronze medal match, the Cardston Cougars dumped the Edmonton Strathcona Lords 57-51. Strathcona coach Roy Wright told the Edmonton Journal that “we played a lot better today and lost two games … We got down in that first minute. They scored off the opening tip and we never got it back. They ran us for four minutes (at the end of the third quarter and it cost us the game.” Cardston led 16-8, 27-20 and 42-36 at the quarters. Rod Beazer paced the Cougars with 16. Don Yuill added 16 and Todd Wolsey 12. Roger Bergsman paced the Lords with 18. Ed Jones added 10. The Lords (coached by Roy Wright, assisted by Art Uhl) also included Mark Jarosch, Lowell Neumann, Dave Glover, Dave Duncan, Roger Bergsmann.
In the final, the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys defeated the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 67-57 after leading 16-13, 32-27 and 53-41 at the quarters. Cowboys coach Wayne Thomas told the Calgary Herald that “I think we established who’s the best team in Calgary. We just played tough defence, the same type of defence we’ve played all along. We got good rebounding from Rob Kendel and Mike Abercrombie and we killed Churchill on turnovers. Apart from Doug Battershill, Churchill’s forwards didn’t hurt us.” Bulldogs coach Terry Mogck said “Crescent just had more gas than we did. We worked hard in the two games to get to the final. Those turnovers killed us in the third quarter. Our guards just couldn’t get anything going.” Mike Abercrombie paced the Cowboys with 20. Keith Smith added 11, Nigel Gainor 11 and Rob Kendel 10. Doug Battershill paced the Bulldogs with 27 on 13-16 from the line. John Tilleman added 12 and Scott Newton 10. Battershill said “I wanted to finish my three years by cutting down the net but I didn’t get a chance.” The Cowboys hit 21-49 (.430) from the floor and 15-18 from the line. The Bulldogs hit 28-70 (.400) from the floor and 11-16 (.600) from the line. The Cowboys had earlier dumped Churchill 59-45 for the Calgary city title. The Cowboys finished (29-5) on the season.
