In the quarterfinals, held at the University of Calgary, the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs edged the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams 48-44. The Bulldogs led 10-8 after one quarter. The Rams led 23-20 at the half. The Bulldogs led 34-32 after three quarters and took command with an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter. Tony Peterson led the Bulldogs with 14. Doug Battershill added 12. Ross Blackmer (according to the Lethbridge Herald) paced the Rams with 17. According to the Calgary Herald, Roy Robinson led the Rams with 17. Ron Shemanchuk added 13 and Scott Anderson 8. The Bulldogs shot 32% from the floor and 85% from the line. The Rams shot 45% from the floor and 53% from the line. Bulldogs coach Del Anderson told the Calgary Herald that “defence and rebounding were key factors in our win. We didn’t panic and throw the ball away. We played a tight, controlled game.” The Rams (coached by Jim Whitelaw, assisted by Lorna Wells, manager Robert Harrison) also included Ed Davies, Randy Stevens, Kelly Wilde, Mark Baldry, Kevin Malmberg, Les Omotani and Roy Hudson.
The Edmonton Strathcona Lords dispatched the Cardston Cougars 45-35 as Randy Meyers scored 10 and Murray McLean 8. The Lords led 20-15 at the half and 38-29 after three quarters. Lords coach Roy Wright told the Edmonton Journal “we were too uptight. But we wanted to win at least one game and we’ve done that.” Jim Toone paced the Cougars with 14. Don Yuill added 11. The Cougars (coached by Tim Tollestrup) included Ken Leavitt, Dave Remington, Rod Beazer, Bracha, Cattle, Remington, Armsworthy, Scott, Olsen, Beazer.
The Edmonton Bonnie Doon Lancers whipped the Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders 50-35 as Dave Johnston scored 18, Terry Sutton 12 and Jim Prince 8. The Raiders led 10-8 after one quarter. The Lancers led 28-21 at the half and 47-27 after three quarters. Lancers coach Brent Foster told the Edmonton Journal “wasn’t that awful? It looks like we were rerunning a movie of last week when we played two terrible games and then came up big in the (Edmonton city) final.” Ross Cloutier paced the Raiders with 10. Ron Humting added 9. The Raiders (coached by Roy Sillars) also included Al Poytress, Brian Beber, Andy Neuman, Bob Cooper, Barry Patterson, Norm Bower. Sillars said “our shootings just came up flat in the second half.”
In the last quarterfinal, the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys whacked the Grande Prairie Tomahawks 60-42 after leading 16-7, 27-23 and 43-29 at the quarters. Cowboys coach Wayne Thomas told the Calgary Herald that “we just wore them out in the second half. They ran out of gas in the third period and we just rolled right over them in the fourth.” Jon Grafton led the Cowboys with 13. Mike Abercrombie added 10 and Keith Smith 9. Zenon Smiechowski paced the Tomahawks with 18. Eric Anderson added 11 and Dale King 9. Tomahawks coach Roger Mestinsek told the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune that “we ran out of gas.” The Tomahawks (coached by Roger Mestinsek) also included Gary Sinclair, Mike Stojan.
In the semis, the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs crushed the Edmonton Bonnie Doon Lancers 73-55. The Lancers led 15-12 after one quarter. The Bulldogs led 33-24 at the half and 46-37 after three quarters. Gary Thompson paced the Bulldogs with 20. Kerry Brett added 14, Doug Battershill 12 and Wayne Bishop 10. Dave Johnston led the Lancers with 19. Jim Prince added 14. Lancers coach Brent Foster told the Edmonton Journal “they’re a fine team. We shot 24% and they shot 43. That was the difference.”
In the other semi, the Edmonton Strathcona Lords edged the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys 36-33. The Lords led 9-8 after one quarter. The Cowboys led 20-17 at the half. The Lords led 27-26 after three quarters. Randy Meyers paced the Lords with 10. Keith Smith led the Cowboys with 10. The Lords hit 6-15 from the line, while the Cowboys were 3-5. Lords coach Roy Wright told the Edmonton Journal that “our bench definitely came up big. Everybody on the team made a major contribution.” Cowboys coach Wayne Thomas said “I felt a big disappointment for the boys. Scona’s good good defence and with our big boys, we didn’t have that much movement.” Thomas told the Calgary Herald it was “our worst offensive performance of the year.”
In the bronze medal match, the Calgary Crescent Heights Cowboys dusted the Edmonton Bonnie Doon Lancers 61-50. Cowboys coach Wayne Thomas told the Calgary Herald that “we outhustled Bonnie Doon and played together as a team, which is something. We didn’t do that against Strathcona (in the semis).” Mike Abercrombie paced the Cowboys with 18. Steve Castonguay added 11. Terry Sutton led the Lancers with 15. The Cowboys hit 29-67 (.430) from the floor and 3-5 from the line, while the Lancers hit 23-61 (.380) from the floor and 4-14 (.290) from the line. The Lancers (coached by Brent Foster) also included Dave Johnston, Jim Prince, Doug Lucas, Ken Sackley, Gordon Jenkins, Brent Burr, Terry Sutton, Dale Kirsch. Foster told the Edmonton Journal that “I guess we left it all in Edmonton. That’s the first time we’ve lost two in a row all year. But I think it’s better losing this way, in the second game, than losing a close final game. There were lots of bad memories last year.” The score was knotted at 38 after three quarters.
In the final, the Calgary Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs defeated the Edmonton Strathcona Lords 67-44. Bulldogs coach Del Anderson told the Calgary Herald that “pressure pulls these guys together. They don’t seem to know how to lose when the going gets tough. … Strathcona has a big physical team but we were able to work the fastbreak against them. We increased the tempo of the game, pressed for baskets and tried to keep them off-balance.” Lords coach Roy Wright said “Churchill’s the quickest team I’ve ever seen. Once they get going, they’re impossible to stop. They have both quickness and size going for them.” Wright told the Edmonton Journal that “we’ve got to quite being happy with being second. We’ve second or third five times this year. … It was their quickness. They were quick breaking but they were especially quick around the hoop. They were big and quick. Had they been little guys, we would have been able to contain them.” The Bulldogs led 18-6, 38-24 and 54-34 at the quarters. Doug Battershill, Tony Patterson and Gary Thompson each scored 12 to pace the Cowboys. Wayne Bishop added 10. Mike Jarosch led the Lords with 10. Lowell Neuman added 8. The Cowboys hit 21-66 (.310) from the floor and 25-35 (.720) from the line, while the Lord shit 18-56 (.320) from the floor and 8-16 from the line. Sir Winston Churchill finished (33-7) on the season.
