In the quarterfinals, held in Calgary, the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds dumped the Raymond Comets 61-56 as Brent Fairbanks scored 15, Ken Luchkow 14 and Steve Panteluk 13, Murray Katz 11 and Doug Nicholls 8. The Thunderbirds opened with an 8-0 run and then slowed the game to a crawl. They led 17-3, 33-27 and 47-38 at the quarters. They extended their lead to 60-45 and hung on for the win, icing it with a pair of Doug Nicholls free throws with three seconds to play. The Thunderbirds hit 11-18 from the line, while the Comets were 10-18. Lloyd Fairbanks led the Comets with 27, despite being double-teamed or triple-teamed for most of the second half. Rick Smith added 14 and Gary Williams 10. The Comets (coached by Bob Gibb, assistant Brian Dudley, manager Jack Rolfson) also included Monty Court, Roger Jensen, Spencer DePew, Kim Gruninger, John Jasiukewicz, Doug West, Bill Nalder.
The Jasper Place Rebels defeated the Magrath Zeniths 55-46 as Curt Wolsey scored 18, Brian Hart 16 and Bill Evans 10. The Rebels hit 13-20 from the line, while the Zeniths hit 6-13. Donald Hamilton led the Zeniths with 16. Stephen Leishman added 12, Craig Leishman 11 and Rusty Rollingson 2. Rebels coach Johnny Bright told the Edmonton Journal that when Magrath ripped off an 8-0 run he feared “I’d made a mistake. I could see death’s grip grabbing me by the throat.” Magrath led 14-11 after one quarter. The Rebels led 31-20 at the half and 49-36 after three quarters but Magrath closed the gap with a 1-3-1 zone and a half-court press. Magrath hit 6-13 from the line. The Zeniths (coached by Ray Stevenson, statisticians Valerie Wilde and Janice Toomer) also included Jim Newton, Shane Gurney, Wayne Harris, Bruce Ririe, Franklin Scout, Donald Hamilton and Rick Ponomar.
The Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders edged the Calgary Lord Beaverbrook Beavers 47-46 in double overtime. The Raiders led 19-9 after one quarter and 32-23 at the half. The score was knotted at 42 after regulation and at 44 after the first overtime. Doug Baker paced the Raiders with 18. Doug Smith led the Beavers with 13. Marvin Bohne added 12 and Clint Duval 12. The Beavers also included Tony Sulkers.
In the last quarterfinal, the Calgary St. Francis Browns stomped the Sherwood Park Salisbury Sabres 76-35 as Herb Tutto scored 15, Gerry Hamel 14, Al Ripplinger 11 and Greg Grassick 11. The Browns led 21-6 after one quarter and 46-13 at the half. The Brown hit 32-86 from the floor, while the Sabres were 11-29. John Denison led the Sabres with 10. The Browns hit 32-86 (.390) from the floor, while the Sabres were 11-29 (.370). The Sabres also included Bill McDermid.
In the semis, the Edmonton Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds dispatched the Red Deer Lindsay Thurber Raiders 57-44 as Steve Panteluk scored 16 and Doug Nicholls 14. Rick Ferster paced the Raiders with 13. Les Gray added 12 and Doug Baker 11.
In the other semi, the Jasper Place Rebels stomped the Calgary St. Francis Browns 83-51 as Keith Bowes scored 16, Bill Evans 16, Harvey Dalzell 15, Brian Hart 14 and Curt Wolsey 13. Gerry Hamel paced the Browns with 23. The Rebels led 53-20 at the half.
In the bronze medal match, the Calgary St. Francis Browns dispatched the Red Deer Raiders 64-53 as Al Carlston scored 13. Doug Baker led the Raiders with 20. The Raiders (coached by Roy Sillars) also included Rick Ferster, Les Gray, Brian McCook, Gary Harris, Trev Watson, Clint Neis.
In the final, the Edmonton Jasper Place Rebels defeated the Edmonton Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds 51-43 after leading 32-31 after three quarters. The Rebels finished (29-2) on the campaign. Curt Wolsey paced the Rebels with 17. Brian Hart added 13. Murray Katz and Steve Panteluk each scored 11 to pace the Thunderbirds.
