After the season, Steve Seabrooke stepped aside after 15 years at the helm of the John Abbott Islanders, saying that he was spending more time with the program than at his real job as a phys ed teacher at Wilder Penfield Elementary in Dollard. “I found, especially since I didn’t work at the school, that it’s necessary to be there an hour before practice to talk with players and take care of the all the little things that needed to be done,” he told the Montreal Gazette. It was those “little things” that made coaching a CEGEP basketball team a full-time job without salary, rather than a part-time hobby. During his tenure, the Isles compiled a 295-224 record but never won a provincial championship. The Isles were five-time runner-ups at provincials (1988, `89, `90, `91 and `95) and made two appearances at nationals (1988 and `96). The team captured regular-season titles in 1989 and `95. Seabrooke was replaced by Mike Boutin, coach of the men’s AA team at College Édouard Montpetit in Longueuil.
