The Kermodes utilized 10-0 and 16-0 runs to take command in the first half. The Chargers tried to answer with a 10-0 run in the third quarter but had dug themselves far too deep a hole. The Mariners broke to an 11-1 lead but the Royals rallied to within 11-8 after one quarter in a grinding, defensive affair. The Mariners led 20-17 at the half and 34-31 after three quarters. Jocelyn Jones drilled a trey to give Vancouver Island a 43-38 lead with three minutes to play. But Chloe Kennedy countered with a trey and Mackenzie Brenner knotted the score with a minute to play to force the extra session. Adelia Paul hit a pair of free throws and Chloe Kennedy drove the court for a layup-and-one as the Royals pulled out the win. The Mariners led 37-35 at the half. Jocelyn Jones was chosen player of the game for the Mariners, while Elyse Matthews earned the laurels for the Chargers. “We were nervous,” said Chargers guard Kelly Young. “In the first half, we weren’t making our shots. We were hitting under 15 per cent.” Jocelyn Jones paced the Mariners with 12 on 4-15 from the floor, 0-5 from the arc, 4-7 from the line, 7 boards, 6 assists and 4 steals.         In the final, the 3rd-seeded Quest Kermodes whipped the 5th-seeded Douglas Royals 69-52 after leading 17-12, 28-24 and 55-37 at the quarters. Aimee Johnston was chosen player of the game for Kermodes, while Adelia Paul earned the laurels for the Royals. For the team’s three graduating players, Cassidy Osterling, Cynthia Lau and Courtney Harpur, it was a four-year journey. “It’s crazy to be honest,” Osterling said. “We said at the beginning of the year that our team goal was to go to Montreal and we made it happen. To think that four years ago we didn’t even make the playoffs and now to be standing here with a gold medal is pretty insane.” The Kermodes took an early 8 point lead but the Royals cut it to four before Quest took command in the second half. “We were still excited and just needed to refocus, Harpur said. “We took a couple of deep breaths, realized where we were and just kept playing.” Kermodes coach Dany Charlery said the team’s depth and chemistry proved the difference. “Everyone knows their role and everything we’ve done we’ve done together. The environment here is so team oriented, it’s so great to see and be a part of.” Aimee Johnston paced the Royals with 14 on 7-12 from the floor and 8 boards.
