In the semis, 2nd-seeded University of Northern British Columbia defeated the 3rd-seeded Capilano Blues 75-70. UNBC Timberwolves and the Blues went end to end and shot for shot in the first quarter Friday with UNBC jumping to a 19-16 lead. Capilano had more spark but squandered too many possessions with errant long passes and traveling violations. Blues leading scorer Carlee Babcock nailed a three to start the second quarter and snuck into the passing lane a few plays later to take a steal the length of the court and hit a lay-up with two UNBC defenders on her back. She missed the following foul shot but the Blues corralled the rebound and swung the ball to standout guard Pam Goddard, who nailed a three from the corner to knot the score at 26-26. Goddard took control of the quarter, driving the lane the next offensive possession, drawing a foul and converting her shot as she fell to the floor. She hit the foul shot and repeated the exact same contact-drawing drive on the next possession to power Cap to a 40-34 lead. The Blues went into the half up 42-39. The teams traded baskets to start the second half and then Babcock lit up the home crowd with a sandwich of three great plays, hitting a three and forcing a steal and hitting another three. The Blues stopped the ‘Wolves on the defensive end and St. Germain popped a three for a 54-36 Blue’s lead with three minutes left in the third quarter. But with a chance to put their foot to UNBC’s throat the Blues lapsed into a string of unfocused possessions and the visitors closed the gap to 56-52 after three quarters. Capilano continued to lack good looks at the hoop into the fourth and UNBC jumped up 62-60 with four minutes to go. UNBC’s Jaclyn Nazareno took control from the point guard position and hit a hook-shot layup putting the team up 68-63. Next the ‘Wolves forced a turnover on the Blue’s inbound pass and had a clear layup opportunity but Cap forward Mallory Gerwing came up with a big stuff from behind. The inbounds pass went to UNBC and Nazareno was fouled driving the lane and hit both free throws for a 70-63 lead with two minutes to go. Goddard came back for the Blues with her skill of drawing contact in the lane and hitting off-balance shots. She hit two such shots plus foul bonuses in the space of 11 seconds to bring Cap back to within three at 71-68 with one minute on the clock.

The Blues had several chances to draw even but couldn’t convert foul shots and three-point attempts. Kady Dandeneau paced UNBC with 23.
