Mariners coach Tom Elwood told the Nanaimo Daily News that “if you’re going to do it that many times (miss shots), it’s destiny. I thought we were going into double overtime because we were passing the ball around like it was a hot potato.” Sage drove for an off-balance layup past Cascades guard Erin Brooks with 3.2 seconds to play to force overtime. It circled the rim twice before dropping through the net. Sage said “that was kind of our little game play to take it to the hoop if I could. I didn’t think about it – for the first time, I guess, in the whole game – I just did it. I don’t even know if I had my eyes open.” Leonin told the Harbour City Star that things looked grim at the half. “I was really doubtful. But then we came out with a 9-0 run and we were right back into it.” Donna Lovett paced the Cascades with 18. Martha Craig added 10. Malaspina broke to a 12-3 lead but Leanne Kiley hit a trey to ignite an 11-2 Cascades rally to knot the score at 14. The Cascades led 34-20 at the half but the Mariners ripped off a 9-0 run after the break.
