Once their outside shots started to fall, the Thunder were able to gain the advantage and stretch an early second-quarter lead to a 30-17 edge at halftime and 56-34 after three quarters.         The Mohawk Mountaineers dusted the Durham Lords 64-50 after leading 19-14, 36-20 and 51-34 at the quarters. Five different Mountaineers hit treys in the first quarter as Mohawk took command. To start the second quarter, the Mountaineers implemented a full-court press and got in the way of Durham’s cross-court pass attempts to hold the Lords to just six points in the period. Mohawk also turned their good defence into offence, finding more ways to score than just behind the arc. Offensive rebounds and a good transition game helped the Mountaineers pull ahead 37-20 at the halftime break. Durham started to press on defence to start the third quarter and slowly crept back into the game after a couple of forced turnovers. Mohawk adjusted, however, and was able to pass around the pressure to hang onto an eight-point third quarter lead. Mohawk’s defence continued to stifle the Lords offence in the fourth quarter, getting their arms into the passing lanes, causing tipped passes and forcing turnovers.         In the last quarterfinal, the Humber Hawks clipped the Sheridan Bruins 67-55 after leading 16-11, 25-23 and 48-36 at the quarters. Humber broke to a 10-2 lead on crisp ball movements. The Hawks cooled off considerably in the second quarter, however, allowing the visiting Bruins to crawl back into the game. With Humber leading 20-19 late in the quarter, Humber’s Mary Asare finally ended the Hawk’s scoring drought with a three-pointer and the Hawks went into halftime with a 25-24 lead. The Hawks opened the second half on a 13-0 run stopped by two free-throws from Sheridan’s Haeven Durrant. The Bruins started the third shooting poorly and were unable to keep pace with the scoring depth of the Hawks who had four players score in double-digits.         In the other bronze quarterfinal, the Sheridan Bruins dispatched the Durham Lords 69-61 after leading 18-14, 36-29 and 43-42 at the quarters. Kate Mowat opened the scoring with a layup for the Durham Lords but they didn’t keep up the low-post play until late in the second quarter. The Bruins attacked off the dribble to rally from an early 7-2 deficit. Sheridan took a four-point advantage into the second quarter as the Bruins dominated the boards, which helped their transition game. The Bruins rallied by pounding the ball in the post. The Lords cut the lead to one in the second half by packing the paint. The Bruins opened the final frame with a 7-0 run, forcing the Lords into the foul game. But Sheridan hit their free throws to pull out the win. Shylanda Saunders was chosen player of the game for the Bruins, while Kate Mowat earned the laurels for the Lords.         In the semis, the host Mohawks Mountaineers stomped the Humber Hawks 65-43. The Hawks led 14-12 after one quarter and 30-24 at the half. But the Mountaineers stepped up their defence and took a 48-38 lead after three quarters. After the fast start, both teams cooled off considerably, remaining at eight until the four-minute mark of the first quarter.

Mohawk employed their usual pressing defence and helped each other out with quick rotations while Humber’s length started to give the Mountaineers fits at both ends of the court. Humber’s Mary Asare used her size in the post along with the shooting touch of Marie Maranan to give Humber a 30-24 halftime lead. The Mountaineers started the third quarter on a 5-0 run. Offensive rebounds continued to be a concern for Mohawk but their defence held Humber to just 13 points in the half, including a mere five points in the final quarter. Coach Kevin Duffy made the needed adjustments at halftime for Mohawk as the women ran an efficient offence that saw them getting open looks at the basket. Mohawk’s Lacey Wolters utilized her size to grab several offensive rebounds and gave the Mountaineers a good low-post scoring threat.         In the other semi, the Algonquin Thunder stomped the St. Clair Saints 76-47 after leading 17-13, 42-21 and 59-37 at the quarters. Thunder coach John MacInnis noted that “in our biggest game of the year thus far we had one of our best games. We executed our game plan perfectly and really dominated from start to finish. Felicia Mazerolle and Sandre Bascoe dominated the game at both ends of the court. This was a total team effort as our superior depth just overwhelmed the Saints.” A very skilled, fast-striking Algonquin team had their offence clicking in the first half, giving the Saints trouble on defence. The Thunder’s Sandre Bascoe used her length and scoring touch in the lane to help her team go into halftime with a 42-21 lead. A Bascoe layup ended a 7-0 St. Clair run to start the second half. The Saints matched the Thunder offence for offence in the third quarter but couldn’t keep pace with the high-tempo scoring of Algonquin. The Saints were a step slow on defence often allowing the Thunder forwards to sneak in behind them for easy layups. The St. Clair Saints looked sharp early, running a balanced offence of inside and outside scoring. Even when they were up by 20, St. Clair used an up-tempo offence and turned good defence into transition points to extend their lead to 30. Meighen Boyd buried back-to-back three-point shots and Jessica Gordon provided sure handed scoring in the paint to help the Saints take a 36-26 lead into halftime. Gordon was also stellar on the defensive side of the court, coming up with two of her six blocks in the first half. Sheridan resorted to the outside shot early then started force the ball inside. Shannon Kennedy was chosen player of the Game for the Saints, while Sabrina Brathwaite earned the laurels for the Bruins.         In the other bronze semi, the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings edged the Humber Hawks 55-49. The score was knotted at 11 after one quarter. The Hawks led 25-18 at the half and 40-27 after three quarters. St. Lawrence continued to press Humber early as they built a 9-2 lead. Then Humber went on a 9-2 run of its run to knot the score after one quarter. The Hawks opened the second frame with a 6-0 run. The Hawks man-to-man defence held St. Lawrence to just seven points in the second quarter, and only nine in the third, giving Humber a 13-point lead going into the final period, primarily on the physical play of Chioma Oriuwa and Brenda Carachure in the paint. The Vikings woke up in the fourth quarter. The Vikings were ice cold from downtown, going 0-for-13 from behind the arc in the first-half. Then St. Lawrence’s player of the game, Lacey Knox put her team on her back, making four three-point shots in the second half. Natalie Hagopian was chosen player of the game for the Hawks.         In the bronze medal match, the St. Clair Saints nipped the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings 59-57. The Saints led 16-13 after one quarter. The Vikings led 35-24 at the half. The Saints led 45-44 after three quarters. St. Lawrence started the game with the same full-court press defence but when St. Clair started to get easy layups behind the trap, the Vikings abandoned the strategy only to return to the press in the second quarter when the Saints started to pull ahead. The decision to start the press again was a good one, holding the Vikings to eight points in the second quarter. The Vikings then cooled off in the third quarter, relying on three-point attempts to stop St. Clair’s comeback. The Saints did finally take the lead with a Jessica Gordon layup. Good shooting from Kendyl Rizea and Shannon Kennedy helped the Saints eventually take a 45-44 lead into the fourth quarter. The Saints only managed two points in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Then, just when they needed a boost, Meighen Boyd buried a three, followed by a Kelly Rizea layup to take back a one-point lead. Up by one in the final minute, the Saints allowed Nicolle Gaudet to sneak into the lane, unguarded on an inbounds play, and give the Vikings a one-point lead. Gordon refused to go down easily, however, and answered Gaudet’s bucket with a three to go up two. Then it was up to Gaudet again at the free throw line but the Kingston native could only manage one of two, forcing the Vikings to foul after the Saints collected the rebound. A Kendyl Rizea free throw was all the points the Saints needed to ice the win. Rizea was chosen player of the game for the Saints, while Haley Gourdier earned the laurels for the Vikings.
