St. Clair opened with a 16-4 run and extended their lead to 29-7 midway before Durham closed to within 33-17 at the half. In the second half both teams forced the tempo with full court pressure resulting in a lot of turnovers and a foul plagued game. Durham closed the gap to within 12 points on three occasions but St. Clair never relinquished control and held a 23-point lead with about three minutes to play before emptying the bench. Sara Levesque paced St. Clair with 25 points and 11 boards. Julia Horti scored 11, Ashley Huston 10, Katie Goodburn 9, Jenae Grayer 7, Sarah Stevens 7 and Sadi Moro 2, while Jamie Forbes, Carina Heyber, Kendall Quinlan and Kelly Risea were scoreless. The Grizzlies also included Dana Marley, Courtney Okonsky, Sydney Bakker, Tonya Cailes, Dana Campbell, Megan Robertson, Chelsea Sheff, Tammie Barriage, Kara Faulkner, Sara Blagdon and Cori Leslie. …………………………………………………… The Niagara Knights (West 5th) nipped the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings (East 4th) 60-58. St. Lawrence led for 39 minutes. But in the final seconds of the game with the score tied at 58, Whitney Jackson would come up with a huge block and then make a court-long pass to Kristy Lee who would score a lay-up with four tenths of a second left in regulation to give the Knights the victory. Niagara would find themselves down by as much as 18 in the first half, but would cut the deficit to 12 by the break. “This was a big win for our team,” said Niagara coach Ron Lemon. “We could have quit or hung our heads at half, but instead we came out and battled hard in the second half to pull out the win,” he added. The Vikings opened the game off strong in front of a loud home crowd jumping out to an early 11-2 lead, and continued the pressure throughout the first half. Danielle Greek collected 10 of her 16 points in the first half, while the Kingston duo of Kari Stuart and Kyle Stover lit up from beyond the arc combining for four three pointers in the first half alone. Stuart and Stover continued to be dominating from the perimeter hitting another four in the second. Stuart finished with a game high 17 points and a total of five three pointers while Stover collected 11 points. “It was the best game of the season for us.” stated Stuart. “We had nothing to lose and we left everything on the court today.” Niagara did not give up after falling behind in the first and put a full court press for the duration of the second, which the Vikings could not counter. Lee finished with 15 points for the Knights while Whitney Jackson was one rebound shy of a double-double finishing with 18 points and nine rebounds. Kaitlyn McKenna added 16. “All of our girls left the floor with their heads up,” said Vikings coach Andrea Blackwell. “They played their hearts out, and it is defiantly heartbreaking to lose that way. I am proud of the way the girls responded this season. Through all of the major injuries, they really came together as a team.” Niagara coach Ron Lemon said that with six minutes left, we really began to press them and that created a few turnovers that kept us in the game.” The aggressive play on defence and pinpoint shooting on offence finally paid off with their first lead of what Lemon described as a “very difficult win” for his team. “We were never ahead the whole game, but we kept chipping away and chipping away.” With 14 seconds on the clock, the game was tied, but St. Lawrence had the ball and the Vikings were threatening to act as spoilers in Niagara’s comeback bid. But if that was what was scripted for the final act, Whitney Jackson didn’t respond to the final cue. The Niagara centre knocked the ball out of her opponent’s hands, grabbed the rebound and found Lee with a long “baseball” pass for the eventual game-winning basket. “Kristy was in the clear — there was no one around her — and she just made it before the buzzer. It was a Hoosiers-type win for us,” Lemon said. The Vikings also included Cory Ridgley, Chelsea Magladry, Amanda Girling, Alyssa Rodrigues, Corisa Cluett, Brooke Mallen, Sara Peters, Keisha Conway, Paige Shaver and Lacey Broughton.

In the final, the Sheridan Bruins (West 1st) whipped the St. Clair Saints (West 4th) 88-56. From the opening tip the St. Clair Saints drew a line in the sand with a 2-3 zone defensive set-up that forced the Bruins to hit shots from the perimeter. And for a few minutes, the strategy worked as the Lady Bruins struggled to find their range and remained scoreless through the first five minutes. But once they did start converting their attempts, the flood gates opened and the double-blue put on a sublime perimeter shooting display – drilling an OCAA record 14 from beyond the arc – that turned the tide and propelled them to an easy win. “Shots are going to fall. Good shooters never stop shooting,” said Bruins coach Shane Bascoe. “The girls were pretty confident, they kept doing what we do and the shots started dropping.” As the Bruins struggled early on, St. Clair wasn’t able to fully capitalize and held an early 8-2 lead. Jeralyn Espiritu – named the player of the game in addition to a tournament all-star – supplied the first Sheridan lead of the day after draining her first of six three-pointers on the day. St. Clair battled back to take a 13-12 lead, before Hali Burns hit back-to-back three-pointers to restore a Bruin lead that would not be relinquished. What turned out to be St. Clair’s last gasp came late in the first half when the Saints rebounded from Burns’ two three-pointers to tie the game. Sheridan, however, was able to reclaim the momentum and closed the first half on a 21-7 run and held a comfortable, if not commanding, 39-25 halftime edge. In the second half, the Bruins were able to find some seams in the defence and began to inflict inside-outside damage. As the lead began to multiply, St. Clair began to compound its problems by trying to press the action too much and ultimately cost itself possessions with careless turnovers. Hali Burns paced Sheridan with 23 on 7-18 from the floor, 6-16 from the arc, 3-5 from the line and 4 boards. Jeralyn Espirutu added 20 on 7-15 from the floor, 6-12 from the arc and 2 steals. Donisha Young scored 13 on 5-7 from the floor, 3-4 from the line and 4 boards. Sam Scull scored 10 on 5-9 from the floor and 8 boards. Michelle Asare added 9 on 2-4 from the floor, 5-6 from the line and 4 boards. Nakia Arthur scored 7 on 3-10 from the floor and 1-2 from the arc. Caity Wright added 3 on 1-5 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc and 8 boards. Courtney Silvera scored 2 and Brittany Gregory 1, while Colleen Robertson and Jocelyn Hinz were scoreless. The Bruins hit 31-79 (.392) from the floor, 14-35 (.400) from the arc and 12-18 from the line, while garnering 42 boards, including 21 on the offensive glass, 18 fouls, 10 assists, 9 turnovers, 2 blocks and 6 steals.
