In the quarterfinals, the Algonquin Thunder thrashed the Niagara Knights 52-31 as Sara Maybee scored 9, Sheena Butt 8, Jenna Ritchie 4, Kelly Menna 3, Sophie Caron 3, Amalie Russell 2 and Kate Johnston 1, while Amalia Molina, Kacie Blundell, Jessica Lapensee and Madeline Boudreau were scoreless. Paula Shaver paced Niagara with 6. Abby Cass added 4, Lindsey Norris 3, Jackie Birtwistle 2, Jessica Smith 2 and Jamie Fong 1, while Vanessa Steen, Jaylene Poirer, Christina Hintenberger, Lindsay Cloughley, Kara Kurgan and Kylie Douglas were scoreless. The Knights (coached by Phil Mosley, assisted by Ron Lemon) also included Marissa Scott.

The St. Clair Saints dumped the Durham Lords 60-51 after rallying from a seven-point second half deficit. “I didn’t want this to be my last game,” said guard Tina Sirka. “This is a big relief and I think we’ll relax now.” Forward Kim Pawluk said the Lords played hard early. “They were pumped and really motivated. They were better than us.” The Lords took a seven-point lead with 13 minutes to play when St. Clair coach Linda Carriere called a time out. “I told them the same thing that I told them at the start of the pregame meeting and that’s that the team that does the little things will win the game. Boxing out and moving the ball rather than forcing the shot, pinning your man on defence, rather than trying to run with them.” The Saints came out of the time out and ripped off a 14-2 run. Sirka then hit four straight buckets to give St. Clair a 50-43 lead. ‘I was hot and just called for the ball,” said Sirka, who led the Saints with 14 points off the bench. She added 9 boards and 6 assists. Caroline Draudt scored 13 and Jenn Gray 11 for St. Clair. Lyndsey McPhillips paced the Lords with 16. Samantha McConnell added 11 and Angela Cull 7. The Lords (coached by Craig Andrews) also included Meghan Craig, Krista Colley, Amy Duncan, Lenna Panou, Shaina Hodgson, Nicole Stevenson, Afton Franklin, Sarah Vemb, Simone Lee and Keziah Osei. Lord guard Angela Cull told the Durham Chronicle that “we outplayed in the first half. I think at one point we had a 9-point lead. We were just so jacked.” Lyndsey McPhillips added that “every time we had an opportunity to go on a scoring run, St. Clair got favours from the refs.” Hawks coach Craig Andrews said Saint Tina Sirka “hit four or five key shots in the last few minutes. It was just an unbelievable individual effort on her part.”

The Fanshawe Falcons nipped the Seneca Sting 54-52. The Sting (coached by Mervin Busby) included Natasha Thombs, Amanda Orr, Heather Elchuk, Stephanie Chau, Tara Alexander, Emily Barclay, Lisa Best, Amanda Fisher, Megan Trewartha, Jodi Wilson, Renee Ross, Sharai Fyffe, Simone McGregor and Simone Williams.

In the last quarterfinal, the Humber Hawks throttled the Redeemer Royals 77-47. The Hawks led 22-8 early and 36-23 at the half. They took commanded in the second half, leading by as many as 35. The Royals (coached by Lorne McInnes) included Jenn Ranter, Hannah Flemming, Emily Salier, Julie Honig, Melanie Hotke, Amanda Sjaarda, Heidi Bentum, Natalie Armstrong, Aileen Hovingh, Rebecca Sikkema, Elizabeth Rauws, Lindsay DeWaard and Loreen Deelstra.

Algonquin rallied with a 6-0 run to take the lead at 45-39 but the Hawks responded with an 11-0 run to take command. Castang said “at halftime, coach just said, ’20 minutes left. Give it everything, just leave everything on

the court’ and that’s what I did.” Erin Chamberlain said “we came together as a team, mentally and physically. Everyone stepped up their game in the second half They showed a lot of heart and never gave up.”
