In the semis, the 5th-seeded Mohawk Mountaineers stunned the top-seeded Humber Hawks 80-78 as Mandy Anderson scored 26, Yoshiko Nakada 25, Liz Bacon 11, Pauline Cecile 7, Tammy Koert 6, Stephanie Wilson 3 and Marlene Cabral 2. Nakada took an inbounds pass from teammate Marlene Cabral as time expired and heaved a trey quickly at the basket and it hit nothing but net. Nakada told the Coven “I just wanted to shoot any shot, hopefully I get fouled and get a foul shot. I wasn’t thinking it was going to go in.” The Mountaineers speed confounded the Hawk’s full court press. Hawks assistant Denise Perrier said “we played fairly well but in the second half we missed a lot of easy shots inside.” The Hawks tied the game at 70 on a trey by Tara Lee Reddick. But Mandy Anderson hit a pair of free throws to give the Mohawks the lead again with 30 seconds to play. Humber took a 78-77 lead when Reddick inbounded the ball to Lindsay Higgs, who found Elain Morrison for an open jumper, setting the stage for Nakada’s buzzer-beating heroics. Morrison said “we were pretty confident with three seconds left [we knew] it wasn’t over yet but we were playing tough ‘D’ it was just one of those

shots, once in a lifetime. We knew they were going to be tough, it just wasn’t going to be a walk over.” Elaine Morrison paced the Hawks with 17. Filomena Aprile added 16, Lindsay Higgs 15, Beth Latendresse 14, Tara Lee Reddick 10, Khadija Akbar 4 and Brenda Chambers 2.

In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Fanshawe Falcons clipped the 3rd-seeded Seneca Scouts 49-37 as Jen Goossens scored 11, Tanisha Allen 6, Michaila Larson 6, Jocelyn Getsinger 6, Jacquie Finnie 6, Andrea Flindall 4, Dawn Masters 4, Melinda Thomas 3 and Brenda Rhodes 3.         In the bronze medal match, the top-seeded Humber Hawks dispatched the 3rd-seeded Seneca Scouts 83-70 as Beth Latendresse scored 18, Lindsay Higgs 18, Tara Lee Reddick 14, Brenda Chambers 13, Khadijah Akbar 11, Elaine Morrison 5, Denue Marshall 3 and Filomena Aprile 2. Vanette Graham added 14, Naomi Mullings 10, Keisha McLeggon 6, Jasmine Mirani 5, Chantal Demers 4, Nadine England 4, Julie Ulacco 3, Marsha Bowes 2 and Ariele-Meghan Walker 2. “We decided that it would be more hurtful to us to leave with nothing, that would be embarrassing,” Elain Morrison told The Coven. “We needed something out of this weekend.” The Hawks led 37-31 at the half and took total command on back-to-back treys by Tara Lee Reddick early in the second half. Hawks coach Jim Henderson said “we were ready to play but we were tired, nobody slept last night and the players started to yap and lose their focus. At halftime I got all over them and made sure that no one was talking to the referee but me. We did that and the fouls went the other way. … (Reddick’s shooting) just opened it up and then it’s so much easier, we were able to keep our composure.” The Scouts (coached by Mervin Busby) also included Kelly Johnson, Esther Schleifer, Shannon Taylor, Lorraine Telesford, Melissa Bishop and Nabisa Naiyavong.
