In the final, the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings defeated Durham 56-55 to end the Lords two-year reign as Tier II champs. “The girls were looking forward to this all year,” said Vikings coach Alex Murray. The Lords trailed by nine late in the game but cut the margin to 56-55 when Leslie Seeley hit a bucket with 22 seconds on clock. Fouled on the play, she went to the line with a chance to tie but missed and the Vikings grabbed the rebound. St. Lawrence had led 33-28 at the half but kept rallying. “Some teams, if they’re down by nine points, die a little but not Durham,” said Murray. “They kept coming at us. It was a tremendous effort on both sides of the floor.” Tournament MVP Laurie Yach led the Vikings with 19. Krista Ottenhoff added 18 and dominated the boards before leaving with three minutes to play with torn knee ligaments. Angela Bull scored 10. Murray said Ottenhoff’s loss was evident in the final minutes. “It’s a shock seeing your best player going down hurt. I think it definitely had an effect on the whole team and it upset the game plan in progress. I put in a sub for Krista and thought maybe we could get away without a time out but we were out of sync offensively and defensively.” Elke Wannack led the Lords with 19. Leslie Seeley added 16 and Carol Cruwys 9. Murray said his troops did a great job on Cruwys. “We played man-to-man on Cruwys. Jamie (Holloway) had a great game guarding her. Our whole aim was to take her out of the game. We wanted to make her work her rear off to get the ball. We couldn’t stop all their players but I thought Cruwys inside would hurt us more than their outside game.” Lords coach Laurie Chinnick said “we didn’t go to Carole enough. St. Lawrence played man-to-man on her and she wasn’t getting open enough. Even when she was open, we weren’t getting the ball to her.” But Chinnick was pleased with the Lords defence. “We kept switching. We had a man-to-man on at the end and used a zone press a number of times. It threw them off and they had to keep changing and reacting.”
