In the East playoff, the Durham Lords dispatched the St. Lawrence Vikings 63-44 after leading 33-20 at the half. Kathy Wade notched 14 for the Lords from the perimeter. “If they let her shoot, she can hit the bullseye,” Lords coach Jim Brady told the Durham Chronicle. Lise Welch led the Lords with 17. Cathy Darby added 16. Brady said that at the beginning of the year, Darby “had problems hanging on to the ball. Now she’s cured that. She plays a strong game under both boards. Now she puts more shots back up. She’s so intimidating because she’s so tall. … The girls worked like crazy on defence.” The Vikings included Leigh Fitzpatrick, Josie Bekkedam, Kim Porter, Carolyn Gorham, Heather Allen, Marie Yorke, Jane Quilty, Peggy Theos, Joanne Cardinal, Lyne Corbin and Gislaine Laroque.

In the postseason quarterfinals, held at Centennial College in Scarborough, the Niagara Knights defeated the Durham Lords 64-47 as all-star forward Nancy Mather took command down the stretch. Lisa Welsh had rallied the Lords to within 46-40 with eight minutes to play when the Knights pulled away. “We had a bad game today,” said Niagara coach Russ Stevenson. “We got away lucky with that second half. We thought we had it made being so far ahead. The refereeing helped them – it was absolutely atrocious, as far as I’m concerned.” Mather finished with 16 points. Judy Helstab added 11. Lisa Welsh paced the Lords with 22, despite playing most of the affair with four fouls. Cathy Wade added 10 and Helen Helins 9. The Knights led 35-18 at the half and the Lords rallied no closer than 6. “I didn’t think I’d last that long after those fouls, to tell you the truth,” said Welsh. “The referees were really calling it close.” Lords coach Jim Brady told the Durham Chronicle “we played badly in the first half because we were too high and a bit too nervous. This was partly due to this being our first trip to the provincial finals. If we had started better, we would have been able to win it.” The Lords also included Cathy Darby, Carole Bunn, Pat McDonnell, Sue Ralph, Susan Woodley, Sandra Trigg, Sue Allen and Jackie McManus.

Saints coach Bob Weepers told the Windsor Star that “we were not outplayed. Nor were we outhustled. It was just their shooting that was the difference. Our defence forced them outside but they were hitting consistently.”
