But DeAndre Alfred Johnston knotted the score at 43 on a trey and the DeAndre Austin notched a dunk to give the Falcons a 49-45 lead heading into the final quarter.         In the quarterfinals, hosted by Centennial College in Scarborough, the Humber Hawks dusted the Seneca Sting 82-61. The Hawks defence forced a raft of turnovers, while they did a very efficient job of protecting the ball when it was in their possession. The Sting led 21-17 after one quarter but the Hawks responded with a 22-7 quarter led by Tyrone Dickson to take a 39-28 lead into the lockers. They took command with a 9-0 run in the third quarter and led 61-43 after three quarters, before coasting to the easy win. Tyrone Dickson was chosen player of the game for the Hawks, while OCAA rookie of the year Kahlil Miller earned the laurels for the Sting.         The Niagara Knights (2nd, West division) edged the Centennial Colts (host and 3rd, East division) 70-66 in overtime. The Knights won the battle of the boards in a game in which neither team had command. The Colts broke to an 8-2 lead but the Knights ripped off a late 6-0 run to take a 17-15 lead after one quarter. The Knights rallied to a 4-point lead but Alex Hagoriles nailed a trey to give Centennial a 30-26 edge. Niagara responded with a 5-0 run capped by a trey from Lequan Hylton to take a 31-30 lead into the lockers. After the Colts went up three early in the third quarter, Niagara went on a 6-0 run to lead 41-38. Hagoriles then hit another trey but the Knights reeled off a 7-0 run to take a 48-41 lead after three quarters. The Knights expanded their lead to 8 but the Colts countered with 6 unanswered, capped by an and-one from Malique Hyde. They traded the lead down the stretch before a layup by Marko Curic forced overtime with the scored knotted at 57. The Colts went ahead on a bomb by Curic by Niagara responded with a 5-0 run featuring a trey from guard D.J. Morrison that determined the outcome. Van Hutchinson Jr. was chosen player of the game for the Knights, while Alex Hagoriles earned the laurels for the Colts. They pushed the margin to 43-38 at the half but the Falcons countered with a 16-2 third-quarter run to take a 55-47 lead before the Huskies with an 8-0 run to knot the score at 61 heading into the final frame. In the back-and-forth final quarter, the Huskies prevailed after forcing a shot-clock violation and getting Mascoe to the line. In the last quarterfinal, the Sheridan Bruins (1st, West division) rolled the Redeemer Royals 100-85. The Bruins dominated the boards and outshot the Royals from the free throw line, while the Royals were on fire from the arc. Sheridan took a 20-14 lead after one quarter and in the chippy second quarter, which featured a flagrant foul on Royal guard Foster Brown, the Royals rallied to a 38-35 lead at the half, despite a late 13-4 Redeemer run. The Bruins built an 11-point lead in the second half as Redeemer star Rayvon Higdon was forced to the bench with four fouls but the Royals closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run to draw within 74-68. The final quarter started off chippy as Sheridan scored the first five points of the quarter and Jemol Edwards from the Bruins was called for a flagrant foul. The flagrant seemed to spark energy into the Royals as they went on 11-4 run to draw within 83-79. The Bruins led 91-85 with three minutes to play and closed out the affair with a 9-0 run. Dylan Periana was chosen player of the game for the Bruins, while Rayvon Higdon earned the laurels for the Royals. “I thought we played a little nervous and shaky in the beginning, but we’ve waited two weeks for this, so everyone was excited and once we got that out of our system [and] got our legs under us, we played a really good game,” Hawks assistant Nick Davis said. “Defensively, even though the points don’t show it, I thought we were good there.         In the semis, the Sheridan Bruins outlasted the Humber Hawks 94-85 in overtime. Trailing by six with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Hawks guard C.J. Bennett converted consecutive and-one shots to tie the game at 79.  Sheridan’s Brian Owusu hit an open jumper and both teams exchanged free throws before Hawk Trevon Mollison tied the game once again with 17 seconds remaining. After Dylan Periana missed a layup attempt, a quick kick out from Ancil gave the Hawks a chance to win in regulation but Mollison’s trey rattled in and out. The Bruins dominated the extra session, icing it at the line with 6 free throws, including 4 by Brian Owusu and a pair by Dylan Periana. The Bruins essentially won it at the free throw line, hitting 12 more charity tosses than the Hawks. The game featured 16 lead changes and 15 ties. The Hawks ripped off an early 10-0 run on three treys by Baljyot Judge to take a 14-9 lead. But forward Ostap Choliy rallied the Bruins to within 22-21 after one quarter. Niagara cut George Brown’s lead to two early before the Huskies went on a 6-0 run, capped off by guard Ted Johnson’s four-point play. The Knights countered with a 12-2 run to take a 28-26 lead. Both the Huskies and Knights scored on nine straight possessions offensively as there were 10 lead changes and three ties in the second quarter alone. The Huskies had the last opportunity to score and led 39-38 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Niagara went on an 8-2 run to take a 46-41 lead. But the Huskies countered with a 19-5 run, including back-to-back treys by Dejazmatch James, to take a 60-51 lead. They led 61-54 after three quarters. The Huskies pulled away early in the fourth quarter with a 13-5 run. Dejazmatch James was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while LeQuan Hylton earned the laurels for the Knights.         In the bronze medal match, the Humber Hawks nipped the Niagara Knights 82-79. Despite losing star guard Van Hutchinson Jr. to injury earlier in the tournament, the Hawks by as many as 15 in the final quarter and then withstood a final furious 19-7 run from the Knights. Humber dominated the boards, the line and the arc. The Hawks led 20-10 after one quarter but Niagara went on an 8-0 run in the second to claw within three before a late 8-3 run gave Humber a 29-21 lead at the half. The third quarter saw Niagara slowly chip away at Humber’s lead, cutting it to 62-60 and eventually trailing 63-60 after three quarters. The Hawks put the defensive clamps on as they built their lead 75-60 in the final frame. Things got chippy with Lequan Hylton being called for a flagrant foul. Niagara then went on a 19-7 run and had a chance to tie the game with 9.9 seconds remaining in the game. Hylton had the ball and got a good look from deep but missed and Dickson grabbed the board, ending the game.         In the final, the Sheridan Bruins nipped the George Brown Huskies 76-74 as forward Brian Owusu drilled a jumper with 0.1 seconds remaining the clock. “It’s amazing,” said tournament MVP Dylan Peraina, who nailed 7 treys. “I wouldn’t have it end any other way. … I knew that (Owusu) can get off a good shot no matter who was guarding him. I got the rebound and passed it back.” Owusu said “I wanted to get a good look and it was going to go. I’ve worked on my game a lot over the summer so I believe in everything I put up.” Interim coach Nick Davis, filling in for Bruins head coach Jim Flack, who was on medical leave, said the Huskies “play hard. I have a lot of respect for Coach Jonathan Smith and what he’s done with the program.” Owusu said “the East has really earned a lot of respect from us this season.” Davis also said that Kevon Mascoe “was amazing the whole game. I felt bad for him because I thought he deserved a better fate.” Neither team led by more than six and the difference was rebounding and second chance points (3-19 for the Bruins). The Bruins went up 7-3 early before the Huskies reeled off a 7-0 run. Sheridan led 18-16 after one quarter. Kevin Mascoe began bombing from the perimeter as he gave the Huskies a30-26 lead but the Bruins countered with a 7-0 run. A dunk from Huskies forward Matthew Bukovec at the buzzer put George Brown up 37-35 at the half. With the score knotted at 47, Sheridan went on a 10-4 run to close the fourth quarter leading 57-51. The Huskies opened the final frame with a 7-0 run, capped by a trey from D.J. James. Consecutive treys from Ostap Choliy and Dylan Periana put the Bruins back up 63-58. Both teams then exchanged baskets until Periana was fouled with 18.1 seconds left, with Sheridan up 73-71. But Periana hit just 1-1, giving the Huskies a chance to tie the game. George Brown had Clarke isolated at the top of the key before he dished to a wide open Mascoe, who sank the corner three to tie the game at 74. Owusu missed a shot from the corner but Periana pulled down an incredible offensive rebound and passed in midair back to Owusu, who hit a ridiculously contested jumper.
