In the gold medal final, the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings earned their record fifth Tier II title by crushing the Sault Cougars 83-58. The Vikings shifted to a zone after nearly blowing a 16-point lead in the first half. “I thought we were cruising,” said Vikings coach Barry Smith. St. Lawrence had taken a big early lead but the Cougars rallied to within 39-35 at the half. “At halftime, we talked about relaxing, how we weren’t going to lie down, and that all we had to do was play 20 minutes of hard basketball. Some of the players were concerned. They could see the whole season going down the tubes because they played one bad game.” Smith ordered his troops into a zone at the break and it relaxed them, while confusing the Cougars. “They couldn’t seem to find the openings and they weren’t shooting well from outside,” said Smith. “If they’d scored three times in a row, I’d have said to heck with it. But six trips up the floor failed to produce a basket.” Brad Goodridge led the Vikings with 34. Mike Peterson added 19 and Mel Martyn 11.
