In the semis, held in Etobicoke, the Sault Cougars defeated the Royal Military College Paladins (then the Redmen) 90-82 after erasing a 17-point first-half deficit. Dennis Findlay was chosen player of the game for the Cougars. Phillippe Johnston was chosen player of the game for the Paladins. The Cougars rallied in the second half as RMC tired. “I think we just ran out of gas,” said Redmen coach Gord Hodson. RMC had opened with a 10-0 run and extended their lead to 17 before Sault rallied to within 48-41 at the half. But the Cougars ripped off a 19-5 run late in the game to take command. Although RMC rallied to within five in the final minute, it was too little, too late. “I think we did ourselves in the first half,” said Hodson. “We ran really well in the first but when you full-court press like that, it’s hard. You need superior conditioning to play full-court defence like that.” The Redmen were playing without starters Barry Cross, who was on vacation, and James Lambert, an 18.3 ppg who’d sprained an ankle a week earlier. Dennis Findlay paced the Cougars with 19. Brendan Taylor added 17, Reuben Baines 15, John DiRenzo 14, Rick Warkentin 8, Paul Menary 3 and Phil Tilton 2. Philippe Johnston led RMC with 38. Paul Kluchert added 28, Lee Wendland 7, Mark Lewis 5, Jason Burt 3 and Jean-Marc Dumontet 1.

In the other semi, the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings defeated the Sir Sandford Fleming-Peterborough Knights 81-43. Jeff Montgomery was chosen player of the game for the Vikings. Frances Peeters was chosen player of the game for the Knights. The Vikings opened with an 8-2 run, extended their lead to 20-5, 29-9 and then 49-24 at the half before opening the second frame with a 9-0 run. Coach Ted Batchelor said his troops were testing out a new offence that had been installed five days earlier. “We worked pretty hard on it and it was pretty clear that it paid off for us in the first half. When we had the kids who had been working in the proper positions, we got a lot of cuts off the high post. We got a lot of backdoor layups. In the first half, we moved the ball very well in the front court. We did not move the ball as well in the second half but I think for all intents and purposes, the game was decided in the first half.” John Turner led St. Lawrence with 16. Mike Flaherty added 15, Karl Andrews 13, Dave Norris 10, Jeff Montgomery 8, Brian White 6, Gerald Chidowe 6, Marc Larisey 3, Kyle Mallen 2 and Sylvain Cloutier 2. Francis Petters paced Fleming with 16, including 10 in the second half. Mike Robinson added 8, Cory Cavanagh 5, Pat Proulx 5, Tim Burke 2, Greg Finnigan 2, Scott Holmes 2, Terry McGill 2 and Tom Langman 1.

In the bronze, Paul Kluchert was chosen player of the game for the RMC Paladins (then the Redmen), while Mike Robinson was chosen player of the game for the Sir Sandford Fleming-Peterborough Knights. The Redmen prevailed 81-75 as Paul Kluchert scored 25, Jason Burt 23, Phillipe Johnston 19, Jean-Marc Dumontet 6, Derek Gowanlock 5, Lee Wendland 3 and Lou McNamee 2. Mike Robinson led Peterborough with 23. Pat Proulx added 18, Frances Peeters 12, Tom Langman 6, Terry McGill 5, Tim Burke 4, Jason Baty 3, Greg Finnigan 2 and Scott Holmes 2, The Knights also included Cory Cavanaugh, Rob Badalto and Matthew Smith.

In the final, St. Lawrence Kingston defeated the Sault Cougars 90-81. Dave Norris was chose MVP for the Vikings, while Denis Findlay was chosen MVP for Sault. Mike Flaherty led the Vikings with 23. Gerald Chidowe and Dave Norris each added 15, Brian White 11, Karl Andrews 11, Jeff Montgomery 9 and John Turner 6. St. Lawrence shot 16-26 from the line, and hit eight from beyond the arc. Dennis Findlay led the Cougars with 35. Scott Davie added 12, Reuben Baines 12, John DiRenzo 11, Brendan Taylor 9 and Rick Warkentin 2. The Cougars shot 12-17 from the line and hit nine from beyond the arc. “That was a special moment I’ll always remember,” Montgomery said years later. “We set that goal (of going undefeated) when we were 7-0), so when we finished undefeated, it was a high.” Vikings coach Ted Batchelor had dispatched Mike Flaherty to the dressing room near the end of the first half after he was hit with a pair of technicals. Flaherty was complaining about a call and fired the ball at an official. As he walked away, he kicked his right leg at a Sault player. “I thought a lot of cheap stuff wasn’t called and I end up getting a technical for something I felt I didn’t deserve. Then I got spit on and I got another technical. That’s the bottom line why I blew up,” said Flaherty. He was sent to the locker room, showered and changed. Late in the second half, Batchelor looked down his bench for Flaherty. He wasn’t there and the coach went looking for him. “I thought the coach told me to go take a shower so I went to the dressing room,” Flaherty said. “It was a misunderstanding but it was probably best that I went to the dressing room.” Batchelor later noted that “I was just trying to get him off the floor and he thought I told him to get out the gym. He misinterpreted what I said. I found in the dressing room, feeling like of low. I told him to get suited up again.” Flaherty noted that “I knew if we lost it would be my fault. My technical put us down by nine points. If the team wanted someone to blame, if we had lost, they could have blamed me. I came out in the second half ready to play but it wasn’t me that won this game. By the time I came back we were only behind by a point.” Flaherty hit five treys on the night.
