In the postseason semis, the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings edged the Sir Sandford Fleming-Peterborough Knights 58-52 as Randy Lambert scored 17. “It was a defensive battle right from the onset,” said Vikings coach Ted Batchelor. “Our defence won it for us. Knights held us to our lowest points output of the season. Richard Chambers and Peter Robb add 20 each for the Vikings. The Knights included Kevin Schweer, Ken Daize, Percy Steacy, Jim Shubat, Shawn Whitney, Rob Weis, Stephen Elliot, Hayden Adams, Todd Selvage, Don Chapman and Shane O’Donoghue.

In the other semi, the Durham Lords defeated the Cambrian Golden Shield 74-64 as Harry Sillen scored 18. Cutler says the key to that win was the Lords’ improved defensive play. “Our defence came up really big. We had played Sudbury twice in the regular season, winning one and losing one, so we knew it’d be a close game.”

In the bronze medal match, the Cambrian Golden Shield defeated the Peterborough Sir Sandford Fleming Knights 83-75.

In the final, St. Lawrence defeated Durham 65-59 on the rebounding on Mike Maschi, the perimeter shooting of Craig Johnston, a series of critical second half buckets by Andrew Harris and a 1-3-1 zone that befuddled the Lords. “Our defence was awesome and the major factor in our win,” said Vikings co-coach Chris Price. The Vikings Maschi held high-scoring Harry Sillen to just 11 points, including six in the final minute when the outcome was no longer in doubt. Maschi grabbed 10 boards. The Lords focused their defence on Randy Lambert, who scored 33 points when the teams met during the regular season. But that opened up the perimeter for Craig Johnston. The Vikings led by 10 at the half but Durham whittled the lead to two with four minutes to play. Then Andrew Harris got hot. He hit a 24-footer from the top of the key and 4-4 from the line down the stretch. Johnston scored 18, while hitting 8-14 from the floor. Harris added 11, Lambert (the league’s scoring champ) 9 and Richard Chambers 9. Ken Babcock paced Durham with 25. Harry Sillen added 16. Rookie Lords coach Dave Cutler said “we’ve had a great season. I’m very happy with the team and the results. It was a good year for us. We gave it our best shot; it was just a little short. We weren’t happy losing the gold, but everyone realizes we’ve had a great year. We knew our goal was in reach, but we just didn’t have enough. We couldn’t get our outside shooting going and that made the difference.” Vikings coach Ted Batchelor told the Durham Chronicle that “we felt that all year we’ve had the league’s best defensive team. When you can hold a powerful team like Durham to under 60 points in a game (the only time that was done in 18 league and playoff games) you’ve really done a job.
