Algoma guard Jovan Wilson was selected national player of the year. Wilson was the OCAA’s player of the year for the second consecutive season. “His stats are solid and his team is enjoying the best year they’ve ever had,” says Jeff Harris, CCAA men’s basketball convenor. “His shooting percentage is steady, his play is efficient, and he has a calming influence out on the court.” The two-time OCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year is currently ranked third in career scoring in OCAA Men’s Basketball with 1480 points. He was ranked second in the OCAA for total points scored, and seventh overall in that nation. “Jovain continuously demonstrates the skills of a true leader,” says Algoma Thunderbirds head coach Thomas Cory. “He’s competitive, yet demonstrates sportsmanship even after a tough loss.” The Thunderbirds finished 15-3 in the OCAA West division. Wilson (Pickering, Ont.) was one of just two OCAA players to surpass 400 points during the regular season, scoring 404. The fourth-year guard was also second in the league in three-pointers, shooting 59-of-143 from beyond the arc, a success rate of 41.3 percent. He also contributed 108 rebounds, 50 assists, 19 steals and three blocks. Wilson scored less than 20 points in a game on only four occasions as the Algoma Thunderbirds soared to a 13-5 record in the OCAA West region, good for third place. Wilson was also an OCAA West Division first-team all-star.
Vancouver Island coach Tony Bryce was named coach of the year after leading the Mariners to a 15-1 record and the PacWest postseason final. The other nominees for 2012 CCAA Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year were Jim Barclay of the Centennial Colts, Thierry Paul of the Indiens d’Ahuntsic, Rick Plato of the MSVU Mystics and Paul Sir of the Concordia Thunder.         Joining Wilson on the All-Canadian team were: Aminu Bello (Mohawk). The OCAA West region scoring champion averaged 24.4 points per game for a total of 440. The fifth-year guard led the OCAA in field goals shooting 159-of-322, and free throws shooting 84-of-99. Gueye ranked first in the Quebec league in rebounds per game and second in blocks. …………………………………………………… Gurjote Jhaj (Langara). Jahj finished the season as the PACWEST’s second-leading scorer with over 22 ppg. He was a PACWEST All-Star and Player of the Year. …………………………………………………… Leo Morris (Holland). Morris was the Hurricanes leading scorer, once scoring 38 points in a game. …………………………………………………… Eamon Morrissy (University of King’s College). …………………………………………………… Youssef Ouahrig (Champlain Saint-Lambert). Ouahrig led the Cavaliers in almost every stats category and was top 10 in nine of the RSEQ’s statistical categories. …………………………………………………… Ethan Sir (Concordia). Sir was an ACAC team all-star and average 31 ppg in the playoffs. …………………………………………………… Jacob Thom (Vancouver Island). It marked the second time Thom was selected an All-Canadian.
