King’s University College forward Peter Buwalda was chosen player of the year. Two years earlier, as a freshman, Buwalda had shattered both wrists in preseason practice. In a race to finish first in wind sprints, he stumbled and fell into the wall, putting up his hands to prevent his head from slamming into the brick. He broke bones in both wrists. “That was his introduction to King’s,” said coach Bob Day. “He’s a quiet unassuming guy with an outstanding work ethic.” In 1997, he averaged 17 ppg and a phenomenal 18 rpg, almost double his nearest rival in the ACAC. “I couldn’t believe I was that far ahead of everybody. I’ve always been pretty strong in rebounding. But what happened last year was pretty good.” He returned for his fourth year in 1998, an averaged 13 ppg and 7.7 rpg.
