Conestoga guard Yasmeen Smith was chosen the CCAA player of the year. The 5-9 guard and fifth-year broadcasting & digital media major from Cambridge, Ont. (Monsignor Doyle HS), was the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West division player of the year and scoring champion. In leading the Condors to an 8-8 (5th place) finish in the OCAA’s West division, Smith started all 16 regular season conference games, playing an average 34.1 mpg. She hit 149-339 (.440) from the floor, 0-1 from the arc and 58-112 (.518) from the line, while garnering 174 boards, including 118 on the offensive glass and a 10.9 rpg, 42 fouls (fouling out twice), 19 assists, 59 turnovers (an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.3), 4 blocks, 38 steals and 346 points, for a 22.3 ppg. OCAA women’s basketball convenor Colin March said “Yasmeen is a high performing student-athlete who had a standout year in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). She is a class act on and off the court and is an integral part of her team at Conestoga.” Condors manager of varsity & athletic operations Matthew Schnarr said “Yasmeen’s addition has elevated our Women’s Basketball program to new heights and her offensive prowess has allowed the program to compete and defeat some of the top programs this season in the OCAA. Yasmeen is influential on the boards where nightly she tends to lead the game in total rebounds taken down especially on the offensive end of the floor.”

Mount Allison’s Ryan Chase was named CCAA coach of the year. In his fifth year at the helm, he led the Mounties to first-place (16-2) finish Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association regular season. Mounties manager of athletics Marcel Dupuis said “it is the selflessness by which he conducts himself with his team, in respect to the time that he gives to his student-athletes that sets the example throughout the department. His approach to discipline and staying true to a routine are some of the reasons why our Women’s Basketball team climbed to No. 1 in the country.” Chase is also the Director of Operations for Basketball New Brunswick and provides coaching and player clinics across the province. He was the lead for the high-performance Women’s provincial programs. Chase was the mentor coach for New Brunswick Women’s U15 and Women’s U17 at the National Championships and the Canada Games.
