In the quarterfinals, held in Edmonton, the 5th-seeded Seneca Sting dumped the 4th-seeded Okanagan Lakers 76-66. Seneca dominated the Kelowna-based Lakers throughout the entire game – scoring the first basket and never losing the lead. There were still some tense moments for the Sting. Early in the second half, Seneca’s player of the game Ashley Docking earned two quick fouls, bringing her tally to four and forcing her to sit the bench. Continued foul trouble for the entire Seneca team and consistent foul shooting by the Lakers closed the Sting’s lead to just four points with six minutes left in the game. After a quick time-out, Seneca re-grouped, increasing defensive pressure and capitalizing on Okanagan turnovers. Katie Wiess paced Seneca with 15 points on 7-9 from the floor and 6 boards. The Griffins allowed the Lynx a run in the second quarter and then fell asleep down the stretch. “It’s always a good question whether the opposition shoots well because your defence plays badly or because they just make good shots and the defence is not to blame,” said Griffins coach Jim Lazaruk. “In this case, I choose to give those girls credit. They are very good. … When was the last time we had 90 points in a game of this magnitude and had no success? Never.” Sarah Gutkin-Sweezey and Stephanie Nantel ignited a 16-2 Lynx run that broke open a 34-34 tie as Montpetit built a 58-42 lead at the half. “Those two athletes handle the ball extremely well,” said Lazaruk. “We didn’t defend as well as we could have but they shot very well. Mantel sank two spectacular shot when we had the momentum.” Lynx point guard Elise Caron fouled out with seven minutes to play, while also collecting a technical, sending Keira Lintz to the line where she hit four in a row to cut the lead to 83-79. But MacEwan turned over the ball on its next three possessions. The Lynx regained an eight-point lead and Nantel iced it with another trey with 1:30 to play. “That was the three pointer of the game,” said Gutkin-Sweezey. “If she is open, Stephanie usually makes those three-pointers. … We knew we had to be confident, believe in ourselves and stay calm.” Lazaruk noted that “we had the opportunity but we lost a little discipline offensively and we got a little overactive.”

Actually, our whole second-half of the season was great, we only lost one game and the girls could have easily given up after losing the opener here at nationals, but they kept playing hard and that was important for them winning a bronze.
