We were only down two points with three minutes left in the first half,” Hawks coach Denise Perrier told The Coven. But in the second half, “we just deflated, I don’t know what happened. We didn’t rebound, we came out flat. We just couldn’t come back.” Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer said experience proved the difference. “It’s our fifth consecutive year being at the tournament. We were going into it pretty hungry because we lost in the semi-finals the year before.”

The 3rd-seeded Montmorency Nomades crushed the 6th-seeded SAIT Trojans 69-54 as Melanie Godcharles scored 18 on 6-13 from the floor, 3-8 from the arc and 3-5 from the line. Montmorency led 32-25 at the half. The Trojans managed a mere 12 field goals. “When you get to nationals and you don’t score, you’re in trouble,” said SAIT coach Avery Harrison. “We’re just a very low scoring team. You’re asking a lot to hold some of these high scoring teams to under 50.” The Nomades led 19-7 after 10 minutes as Calgary shot the ball like something found in a pasture. “I said all year we don’t play in between,” Harrison told the Calgary Herald. “We either play brilliant or we play so ugly we could crack a mirror. The first 10 minutes, we cracked the mirror pretty bad.” The Trojans switched to a zone, which slowed the Nomades down, and ripped off an 11-0 run, including nine free throws. “We did a great job on defence. We held them possession after possession but we didn’t score either. That was a chance there to make a really good run. To cut it down to seven at the half was a really good step but we should have cut it closer.” Forward Natalie Savarich said inexperience proved the difference. “We’re all new. No one’s been to nationals, I guess, except for me. No one knew what to expect. We came out wary, not knowing how they play.” Nomades forward Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles said tenacity proved the difference. “That’s one of the calling cards of this team, to be tough on defence. When we can do that, normally our offence gets going and things are good.”
