The Hawks rallied no closer than 15 in the second half, largely on 9 straight free throws by Lindsay Higgs.

Their one girl (Marian Fortier) was incredible. We couldn’t do anything with her.”

In the bronze quarterfinals, the 6th-seeded Humber Hawks clubbed the 7th-seeded Capilano Blues 74-58. The Hawks broke to an 18-8 lead but the Blues rallied to within 22-21. Humber led 40-36 at the half on a pair of late buckets and broke the game open down the stretch with a 17-0 run. “The first half we came out on fire,” Hawks coach Denise Perrier told The Coven. “We hit four three-pointers in a row. We came out of the gate early. … “All year, we’ve been a second half team and we hung in there today. We didn’t play as good as we could have defensively in the first half, but it happens. We refocused and pushed and pushed. It made a difference when we put Erika [Fowler] in to play against the strong 6-4, 250-pound defender from the Capilano team. It was a great match-up. Erika beat her down the court and she played great defence against her. “It was a great game for us. It was a real confidence booster.” The Hawks hit .440 from the floor and .545 from the arc but committed 19 turnovers. Hawk player of the game Elaine Morrison scored 18. Lindsay Higgs added 14 and Filomena Aprile 14. Amanda Beers was chosen player of the game for the Blues. The Blues also included Erika Fowler.

The teams traded the lead down the stretch and SAIT won it when Shiana Birrell and Lori Jackson hit six free throws in final 90 seconds. Erickson fouled out with just over a minute to play but SAIT held on for the win. Coach Avery Harrison inserted Jenn Kutchoski in the line-up. “She played like a vet,” said Harrison. “She’s a first-year rookie straight out of high school and she played like a four-year vet. What more can you say?” Erickson said the entire team played with poise. “In all these games where we’re in tough you have to stay calm. The rookies need to see the vets stay calm and the vets need to see the other vets stay calm. …It was really comparable to a final. It was a very emotional game but when we were down, we just kept chipping away. You never stay compliant with a team with lots of experience.”

In the bronze semis, the 5th-seeded Mount Royal Cougars dusted the 2nd-seeded Edouard-Montpetit Lynx 65-53. Katie Kinsmen was chosen player of the game for the Cougars, while Amelie Hudon earned the laurels for the Lynx.

Humber led 22-17 early but the Nomades rallied to take a 27-22 lead and extended the margin to 37-28 at the half. “The first half was decent,” Hawks coach Denise Perrier told The Coven. “We were in the hunt and we had some players in foul trouble, but going into the half, the girls were still motivated. That was great for us.” The wheel quickly fell off, though, as Montmorency opened the second half with 10 run and led by as many as 31. Perrier said “I told the girls that I could sit here and go through everything this team does, but they knew what they had to do. They saw the game last night. I told the girls we just had to play simple basketball. I don’t know what happened in the second half. All of a sudden we looked dead tired.” The Hawks (coached by Denise Perrier) also included Brenda Chambers, Karine Nicolas, Natalie Wood, Filomena Aprile, Elaine Morrison

In the bronze medal match, the 4th-seeded Montmorency Nomades defeated the 5th-seeded Mount Royal Cougars 77-68 to earn a bronze medal after two consecutive silvers. “The only thing missing from Montmorency is a gold medal,” said coach Francois Forget. “But my team played their best basketball of the year here. It was a tough tournament. My team is young. We have six rookies and those rookies learned to play at nationals.” Cougars coach Donovan Martin called the game “a snapshot of our whole season. We’ve had difficulty putting together a complete game. It seems like we just put out one fire and another one springs up somewhere else. Tonight, it was our inability to finish.” The Cougars hit .373 from the floor, while the Nomades were .500. Pascale Morin led Montmorency with 17 points and 3 boards. Audrey Latendresse added 22 and Marian Fortier 12, while ripping down 16 boards. Karen Debbink led the Cougars with 12 points and 6 boards. Annie Walker scored 18 and grabbed 9 boards. The Cascades shot 15-48 from the floor, 7-15 from the arc and 11-23 from the line. “This is why I came back. This is the bang I wanted to go out with,” said Jackson. “I love my team. And we have the most phenomenal rookies. They were all contributors.” Jackson hit 5-6 from the line in the final minute to help SAIT pull out the win. The Trojans led 39-31 at the half but Fraser Valley rallied to knot the score at 57 with five minutes to play and took a two-point lead with just under minutes to go. “It was great for the fans, winning like this,” said Trojans coach Avery Harrison. “But we made it hard on ourselves.” After Jackson hit a pair from the line to make it 64-59 with 24 seconds on the clock, Cascade gunner Rachel Peters dropped a trey. “I said at the time out, don’t give it to Peters at the three,” said Harrison. “And what do we do, we give her a three.” Jackson added another free throw with 10 seconds on the clock. Cascade guard Natalee Brown had a chance to tie at the buzzer but the ball hit the backboard and bounced wide. “My heart stopped beating when it went up,” said Harrison. “I thought it was in.” The Trojans finished (37-4) on the season. “Right from January, coming into the second half of the season, we had a new feeling on the team,” said Jackson. “We knew what we wanted and we decided we were going to get it.”
