In the quarterfinals, the 2nd-seeded host John Abbott Islanders extended their home unbeaten streak to 11 by stomping the Fanshawe Falcons 83-53.
The 6th-seeded Sherbrooke Volontaires stunned the 3rd-seeded Mount Royal Cougars 91-70. Mount Royal blew a 15-point half-time lead. “We were pretty evenly-matched teams,” Mount Royal coach Theresa Elhatton told the Calgary Herald. “In the second half, we just didn’t play well. They got the momentum and rolled with it. Momentum’s such a big part of this game, especially in a game like that. It was very intense. The gym was packed and loud and they were basically playing in their own back yard. Maybe that got to us a little bit.” Callie Lomenda scored 21 for Mount Royal and Jill Sutherin 18. Foul trouble proved the Cougars undoing. Forward Ariana Kane fouled out in the first half. Marianna Raguz joined her early in the second half and guard Kerri Dezutter fouled out with two minutes to play. “We all came into the game focused and thought we were going to win but in the second half, we just came out flat,” said Raguz, who scored 12. Isabelle Chaperon led Sherbrooke with 28 points.
The 5th-seeded Grant MacEwan Griffins edged the 4th-seeded Seneca Scouts 68-66.
In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Fraser Valley Cascades stomped the 8th-seeded Nova Scotia Agricultural College Rams 70-53.
The tournament did not include bronze semis or quarterfinals. In the consolation round, the Mount Royal Cougars clubbed the Fanshawe Falcons 72-53, while the Seneca Sting spanked the Nova Scotia Agricultural College Rams 75-55.
In the semis, the John Abbott Islanders defeated the College Sherbrooke Volontaires 64-49 as Kristina Steinfort scored 22 and Kelly Schumacher 12.
In the other semi, the Fraser Valley Cascades whipped the Grant MacEwan Griffins 75-48.
In the bronze medal match, the Sherbrooke Volontaires clipped the 5th-seeded Grant MacEwan Griffins 100-85.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded John Abbott Islanders nipped the top-seeded Fraser Valley Cascades 59-55 to earn their 9th title in 12 years but first under coach Rick McBrien, who’d assumed the helm two years earlier when Lisen Moore moved on to become head coach at McGill. McBrien, former Vaudreuil Catholic High school coach, was elated with his first crown. It marked the 15th time in 19 years that a Quebec school had won the title. The Lady Islanders won their 13th straight on home court, trailing only twice in the final and never by more than three points. They led 26-19 at the half. Tournament MVP Kristina Steinfort scored 19, while grabbing 9 boards. Rookie guard Cynthia Santamaria scored 15 for the Islanders, including a pair of free throws in the final minute to ice the win. Dalya Delmar-Greenberg scored 7, including a pair of critical three-pointers down the stretch. Denise Rehman led Fraser Valley with 15 points. John Abbott finished (33-6) on the season.
