In the quarterfinals, held at Kamloops’ Cariboo College, the Douglas Royals defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 73-66 in overtime. The Royals forced overtime as All-Canadian Carrie Carlsen nailed a trey with 15 remaining on the clock.

The Red Deer Queens defeated Thompson Rivers (then the Cariboo Goldrush) 73-56. Red Deer led 47-37 at the half. Jenny LaChasseur rallied the Goldrush to within two in the second half by bombing from the perimeter, and shifting to a full-court press which neutralized Queen’s all-Canadian Nadine Traptow. The Gold Rush rallied to knot the score at 50 but Red Deer ripped off a 14-0 run down the stretch to pull out the win. Bonnie Plowman paced the Queens with 22. Point guard Alex Mulner added 16 and off-guard Bev Tanner 12. Kerry Roberts led Cariboo with 15. Gold Rush coach Jerry Lee told Kamloops This Week that his squad lacked offensive punch after a long layoff following the BC playoffs. “I knew it was going to take a half to get into it – we just weren’t up to game speed.” As well, “we didn’t press them in the first half and the first half’s what did us in – that’s a coaching error. Sixty-six (points), that’s normally enough for us to win a ball game. I did not expect Red Deer to be the team that they were.” Queens coach Pat Rawlusyk said “basic basketball” proved the difference, as well as good guard play. “Most presses they can dribble through.”

The top-seeded Ahuntsic Indiennes clipped the 8th-seeded Briercrest Bible College Clippers 84-35.

In the last quarterfinal, the Lethbridge CC Kodiaks stomped the Mount St. Vincent Mystics 89-47 as Carrie Kuntz scored 21, Jaylene Baker 13, Candice Kliebrink 12 and Laura Bethlehem 10.

In the bronze quarterfinal, the Cariboo Goldrush thrashed the Briercrest Bible Clippers 71-35 as Tracey Smillie scored 17 and player of the game Michele Bland 14. “We knew we’d win,” Goldrush coach Jerry Lee told Kamloops This Week. “I think they’re ready to beat someone.”

In the other bronze quarterfinal, the Mohawk Mountaineers defeated the Mount St. Vincent Mystics 69-59.

In the semis, the Ahuntsic Indiennes defeated the Red Deer Queens 50-34.

In the other semi, the Douglas Royals upset the Lethbridge CC Kodiaks 58-54. Kodiettes coach Karrie Tollestrup told the Lethbridge Herald that “we didn’t shoot very well. Despite all the odds, we were still leading the entire game until the last few minutes. We had six people who fouled out, all the starters and the next man off the bench. We were actually leading the whole game until about the last two minutes. It was a very frustrating game. We played very hard, but didn’t execute very well. It was really a tough loss to take. Underneath the basket we never got a fair shake. But I was really proud of the team; they never gave up. Wendy Doram was just outstanding for us. I was really proud of her. She kept us in the game. So did Jaylene with her rebounding.” The Kodiettes were whistled for 40 fouls and the Royals 20. Kari Carlson led the Royals with 17. Lorraine Denis added 16. Jaylene Baker paced the Kodiettes with 15 points and 19 boards. Wendy Doram added 12 and Candice Kleibrink 11. Douglas hit 28-51 from the line.

In the bronze semis, the Mohawk Mountaineers defeated the Red Deer Queens 74-55.

In the other bronze semi, the Lethbridge CC Kodiaks defeated the Cariboo Gold Rush 73-59. Kodiaks coach Kari Tollestrup told The Endeavour that “I told them they had to let go of that loss because it can be easy to not let go and dwell on it. … I was really happy with the way we rebounded and came back.” The Gold Rush (coached by Jerry Lee) included Jenny LaChasseur, Kerry Roberts.

In the bronze medal match, the Lethbridge CC Kodiaks defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 60-48 as Jaylene Baker scored 17 and nabbed 19 boards. Carrie Kuntz added 14 and Wendy Doram 10. “I was really happy with the way the team was able to focus and win the bronze,” said Kodiak coach Kari Tollestrup. “When your hopes are centred around winning the gold, sometimes it’s difficult to comeback.” Tollestrup told The Endeavour that coming home with the bronze “is a lot better than coming home empty-handed.”

In the final, the Ahuntsic Indiennes defeated the Douglas Royals 55-44 as Patricia Demers scored 19 and Vicky Tessier 13. Carrie Carlsen led the Royals with 13. The Indiennes led by 5 at the half.
