In the quarterfinals, hosted by Hamilton’s Mohawk College, the Quebec champ John Abbott Lady Islanders, coached by Chris Hunter, clipped the Nova Scotia Teachers College Hawks 87-46.

The Ontario champ Mohawk Mountaineers, coached by Earl Begg, stomped the Ontario runner-up Centennial Colts, coached by Joan Healey 68-44.

The Quebec runner-up and wildcard 2nd-seeded College Ahuntsic Les Indiennes defeated the B.C. champ Capilano College of North Vancouver, coached by Greg Sharpe, 58-51. Glenda Knight paced the Blues with 12. Debbie Ceiszecki added 10. Ahuntsic led by as many as 18. Capilano rallied no closer than 7.

The Alberta champ Mount Royal Cougars, coached by Donovan Martin, edged the Saskatchewan champ Wascana Institute, coached by Wes Stevenson, 79-74.

In the bronze quarterfinals, the Centennial Colts edged the Nova Scotia Teachers College Hawks 55-51.

In the other bronze quarterfinal, the Capilano Blues dusted Wascana 88-31 as Caroline Hendry scored 16 and Karen Christian 12. Wendy Mounton led Wascana with 12.

In the semis, the Mount Royal Cougars stomped the Ahuntsic Indiennes 68-46 as Denise McPhee scored 16, Sue Jickling 15 and Dawn Foster 13. The score was knotted at 10-10 when the Cougars went on a 13-0 run and never looked back. Mount Royal led by as many as 18 and their tough defence proved too much for Ahuntsic. Marin Ouellet paced the Indiennes with 9.

In the other semi, the John Abbott Islanders defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 67-56 as Sandra Mullins hit 15-17 from the line. John Abbott was ahead by five at the half with Mohawk’s Marcine Blake in foul trouble. John Abbot’s size kept Mountaineer star Claudia de Iulio in check. Mountainners coach Earl Begg told Canadian Press that “the noise (from drum-beating Islander fans) didn’t (bother) me but I think it might have bothered our players. We had a lack of communication on the court because the players couldn’t hear each other. It seemed like homecourt was taken from us and we were playing in their gym. It had a psychological effect.”

In the bronze semis, the Mohawk Mountaineers spanked the Capilano Blues 64-49.

In the other bronze semi, the Ahuntsic Indiennes dumped the Centennial Colts 68-54.

In the bronze medal match, the Ahuntsic Indiennes dispatched the Mohawk Mountaineers 60-49.

In the final, the John Abbott Lady Islanders edged the Mount Royal Cougars 54-49. The Islander’s size and discipline prevailed over the Cougars athleticism and quickness. Mount Royal led 33-19 at the half as point guard Sue Jickling pushed the tempo, Wendy Klassen and Denise McPhee owned the boards and Dawn Foster retrieved all the random loose balls. John Abbott’s Lynn Lazette with two points provided the only spark for her team. In the second half, the roles were reversed. John Abbott’s tough defence, scrambled for loose balls, led by Christine Ferron, Tournament MVP Julie Rousseau and Cathy Millar dominated the boards. Sandra Mullins led the fast break. John Abbott went ahead on a Rousseau basket with four minutes to go and hung on to win. Coach Chris Hunter, who won 6 of the last 10 national titles, left after the season to assume the helm of the McGill Martlets. Julie Rousseau scored 12 in the second half. “We had to blast them at half-time,” Hunter said. “People were taking shots they wanted rather than trying to work it inside to Rousseau or (Cathy) Miller. … I’ve always said if you want to win a game you’ve got to get the ball inside and play tough defence.” Mount Royal coach Donovan Martin told the Montreal Gazette that it was a tale of two halves. “Two things happened to us out there. Their press killed us and so did our shooting. We couldn’t even hit a foul shot in the second half. You’re not going to win if you can’t score.” John Abbott hit its first three buckets in the second half but didn’t take the lead until four minutes remained, while holding Mount Royal to just one bucket in the final three minutes. Rousseau was stellar down the stretch, noting a steal and two field goals in the final minutes. She finished with 16 points. Maureen Timmons and Cathy Millar each added 10. Dawn Foster and Denise McPhee each scored 10 to pace the Cougars.
