McNutt, a six-foot-eight forward who played high school basketball with the Oxford Golden Bears, fought through double-and triple-teams inside the paint in the fourth quarter. “In the second half they didn’t want me to score, that’s for sure,” he said. “But my team stepped up and we made a run. They couldn’t stop all of us.”
        The 2nd-seeded Dawson Blues clipped the 7th-seeded Okanagan Lakers 71-56 as Adrian Hynes-Guery scored 22 on 10-16 from the floor, 2-8 from the line, 5 boards and 5 assists. The six-foot-five native of Country Harbour scored five points in a two-minute span before being sent to the line with 1:02 to go and MSVU up 64-59. Gay nailed both free throws and the Cougars never got closer than five points down the stretch. Mystics point guard Stephen Morris led the rabid defence. The 22-year-old, Lower Sackville native said MSVU has benefited from a total team effort all year long. “We try to stick together as a team. We want it so bad. We made it this far last year and we want to get a championship — it’s our main goal right now.”

In the bronze quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded Mount Royal Cougars smacked the 8th-seeded Nova Scotia Agricultural College Rams 65-35.

In the other bronze quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded John Abbott Islanders clipped the 7th-seeded University of British Columbia Okanagan Lakers 94-77.

Falcon Pat Sewell was hoping to duplicate the feat of his father, a member of the Fanshawe squad that won in 1980. “It would have been really nice. But I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.”

In the other semi, the top-seeded Douglas Royals edged the 5th-seeded Mount Saint Vincent Mystics 63-60. It shows just how competitive our CEGEP Triple-A league is.”

In the final, the 2nd-seeded Dawson Blues defeated the top-seeded Douglas Royals 94-84. The Blues jumped out to a 20-12 first-quarter lead against the bigger Royals and never looked back. Evens Laroche was selected as Dawson’s player of the game. Adrian Hynes-Guery paced Dawson with 19 points on 8-14 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 12-14 from the line and 4 boards. Jozef Hadlaw-Murray added 15 on 5-6 from the floor, 5-10 from the line, 2 boards and 3 assists. The Blues speed hamstrung the Royals. “Nobody thought we would do it but what can they say now? Provincial champs, now national champs,” tournament MVP Adrian Hynes-Guery said, adding that defensive effort proved the difference. “That’s what we preach every day in practice. We don’t worry about the other team, we worry about what we have to do and what we do is defence. That’s what made us come out on top.” The Blues built leads of 20-12, 40-33 and 65-51 at the end of the first three quarters and withstood any run Douglas made. The victory was sweet for the team and school, coach Wayne Yearwood said. “We went through a lot of adversity this year and came out of it, not unscathed, but better people for it.”
