In the quarterfinals, held at Toronto’s Humber College, the top-seeded defending champion SAIT Trojans, undefeated since December 5 of 1981, dumped the 8th-seeded Sheridan Bruins 80-71. SAIT led 37-31 at half. Bill Durnin scored 19, Les Cochrane 18 (selected as player of game) and Mark Rawlyk 14. Richard Hasfal paced the Bruins with 16. Leroy Casanova added 13 and Paul Hancock 13. The win was the 40th in a row for the heavily favored Trojans. Trojans coach Phil Allen told Canadian Press that “we played terrible. We showed a lack of discipline and a lack of composure. I don’t know what got into them.” They appeared unmotivated, Allen added. “I don’t know what turns them on.”
The 4th-seeded Langara Falcons (then the Vancouver CC Cheetahs) whipped the 5th-seeded Briercrest Bible Clippers 86-57. The Falcons led 43-26 at the half and were never threatened. Doug McKinlay (player of game) scored 30, while 7-2, 245-pound centre Cord Clemens, who went on to star at the U. of Victoria, tossed in 14. Jay Derkson added 12. Curtis Frisque paced the Clippers with 19. Rodd Sawatzky added 15. Clemens was double-teamed, opening up the game for Doug McKinlay and Jay Derksen to hit from the perimeter. Falcons coach Dunc McCallum told The Province that “if we hadn’t been so tight in the first half, it would have been even more lopsided.”
The 2nd-seeded Dawson Blues crushed the 7th-seeded Cape Breton Capers 103-69. The Blues led 47-38 at the half and won by 34. Tom Kane paced Dawson with 25. Wayne Yearwood added 20 and Trevor Williams 17. Yearwood was chosen player of the game. For the Capers, Joe MacLelland notched 19, Tim McGarrigle 17 and Gerald MacNeil 12.
In the last quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded Red River CC Rebels stunned the 3rd-seeded Ontario champ Centennial Colts 102-92 as player of the game Rob Beargen scored 27 pts, Gideon Hodge 24 and Bob Flett 15. For Colts, John Kavaratzis hit for 31, Brenton Lowe 17 and Curtis Mascall 15.
In the bronze quarterfinals, the Sheridan Bruins dumped the Briercrest Bible Clippers 71-61.
In the other bronze quarterfinal, the Centennial Colts clubbed the Cape Breton Capers 87-67.
In the semis, the 4th-seeded Langara Falcons nipped the top-seeded undefeated S.A.I.T. Trojans 88-86. Langara led 49-40 at the half and was paced by Cord Clemens, who scored 22, Doug McKinlay, who added 16 and player of game Kevin Hanson, who notched 15. The Trojans were led by Anthony Brown 26. Les Cochrane added 16, while Derrick Dell was held to 14. Trojans coach Phil Allen told the Calgary Herald that “what bothered me was the way we lost the game. We got off to such a bad start. You don’t spot a team 18 points in this type of competition and get away with it.”
In the other semi, the Dawson Blues blew out the Red River Rebels 85-60, despite leading by only 39-38 at the half. Wayne Yearwood paced the Blues with 26. Tom Kane added 26 and Trevor Williams 14. Yearwood was chosen player of the game. Dennis Brown paced the Rebels with 15. Gideon Hodge added 12 and Robert Beargen 12. Dawson took a 39-38 lead at the half after squandering an 11-point lead. “We let down close to the end of the first half,” said Yearwood. “We had a talk in the dressing room and we came out running and I don’t think any team can beat us when we’re running.” Dawson took control with a 16-0 run early in the second half.
In the bronze semis, the Sheridan Bruins edged the Red River Rebels 64-62.
In the other bronze semi, the S.A.I.T. Trojans stomped the Centennial Colts 109-82.
In the bronze medal match, the S.A.I.T. Trojans defeated the Sheridan Bruins 81-75 as Derrick Dell scored 41.
In the final, the Dawson Blues defeated the Langara Falcons 88-87. The Blues led 41-37 at the half. Tourney MVP Wayne Yearwood hit for 27, Tom Kane 18 and Trevor Williams 11. The dynamic trio all fouled out of the game but Dawson held on to win. Williams selected player of game for the Blues. Jay Derksen scored 27 to pace the Falcons. Kevin Reimer added 19 and Doug McKinlay 15. Langara had the ball in their possession with two seconds to play and tried to get the entry pass into Clemens but the Blues intercepted and ran out the clock. Langara had rallied from a 10-point deficit after the Blues big three fouled out. “We found our hearts at the right time,” Blues coach Brent MacPhee told CP. “All season long I’ve been telling my guys that they have a lot of talent but no heart. Today we just decided that we had worked too hard to let it slip away, no matter what.” Langara coach Duncan McCallum said Clemens should have caught the entry pass. “It was right in his hands.” The title was Dawson’s third in eight years.
