In the final, the top-seeded St. Thomas Tommies dusted the 2nd-seeded Holland Hurricanes 66-49 to capture their fifth ACAA crown in six years. “I don’t know how you rank championships, but I’ll be honest, this is the sweetest one,” Tommies coach Fred Connors said. “We’ve gone through a tremendous amount as a team and to watch those girls battle like we battled means the world to me.” The Tommies led 22-16, 33-24 and 47-42 at the quarters. The Tommies capitalized on Hurricane turnovers for runout layups and timely free throw shooting down the stretch to pull out the win. “In games like this it’s those little things that make all the difference,” Connors said. “We were there hitting shots and we stayed composed when we needed to. Our experience and our energy made the biggest difference. They started to fall apart down the stretch, taking technicals and getting down on each other, while we just kept getting tighter.” Tommies player of the game Kelly Vass said “it’s an amazing feeling. We came in knowing they were a good team and we knew we had to buckle down and play solid defense. We did that and obviously it showed.” Kelly Vass paced the Tommies with 15 on 3-11 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 8-10 from the line and 8 boards. Ashley Bawn added 10 on 2-6 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 6-6 from the line, 7 boards and 3 assists. Hilary Goodine notched 10 on 4-10 from the floor, 2-2 from the line and 8 boards.
