        Dalhousie-Sexton:

In the semis, the King’s Blue Devils topped the Mount Allison Mounties 81-65 as guard Kevin Hobbs scored 30 and backcourt mate Dennis Ashe 25. “Mount A was in our faces the whole time,” Hobbs said. “It was really hard to get any shots off from the outside. Our game plan was to take it to the hoop.” Shaun Alie led the Mounties with 22. Rookie Zac McIsaac added 14. King’s led 43-32 at the half. “We moved it very well in the half-court,” Ashe said. “All we had to do was get open.” King’s coach Jeff Paris praised point guard Dennis Humphreys for smoothly running the team’s four-guard offence. “He did a great job handling the basketball. He limited the turnovers and got the ball to Ashe and Hobbs at the right place, at the right time.”

In the other semi, the St. Thomas Tommies defeated the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics 61-53 as guard Barry Brennan scored 22, including four from beyond the arc. Jayson Taker paced the Mystics with 16.

In the final, the King’s Blue Devils defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 101-87 as Dennis Ashe scored 19 on his 27 points in the second half to help the Blue Devils overcome a 52-45 halftime deficit. “There was a lot of talking on the court,” said Ashe. “As a senior I had to take it in my hands. We just brought it together. In our minds, in our hearts, we knew were going to do it.” Rookie guard Kevin Hobbs scored 27, including 5 of the Blue Devils 13 treys. Jason Logan added 14 points and 11 boards. Point guard Dennis Humphreys scored 12. “It’s just an amazing feeling,” said Humphreys. “Last year, we missed the playoffs. We came out strong this year. It was unbelievable how well we shot in the second half.” David Robson and Tim Ross each scored 19 to lead St. Thomas. Scott Foster added 15 and Barry Brennan 10. The turning point may have occurred when Tommie Andrew Robson took a technical with six minutes to play for slamming the ball into the wall after a foul call. Leading 78-76 at the time, King’s notched four free throws to give themselves some breathing space. King’s guard Leon Landry soon nailed a pair of treys to make the lead 88-80. “That call certainly deflated us,” said Tommies coach Dwight Dickinson. “These players are young. They have a lot of emotion in a game like this.”
