Founded in May 1963 as the Western InterCollege Conference (WICC) by charter members Camrose Lutheran College, Lethbridge CC; Mount Royal College, N.A.I.T. and S.A.I.T. The name was changed to the ACAC in September, 1968. The formal name change occurred in 1972. The Calgary Herald, though, that the loops was not formed until September, 1964. (Which is correct?)

In December 1970, the ACAC joined the three other Western provinces to create the 4-West Conference. The 4-West conference playoff system was abandoned in 1979 in favour of sending the conference champ directly to the CCAA nationals.
