        In the final four semis, the Mount Royal Cougars nipped the SAIT Trojans 72-71. The Cougars led 18-17 after one quarter and 37-21 at the half. The Trojans led 62-58 after three quarters. Trojan Rachel Caputo put up a shot with 31.0 seconds remaining only to miss and have teammate Meachel Camahan rebound the ball and put it back in to cut the lead 72-71. Instead of milking the clock to run it down to a possible four second possession for the Trojans, Cougars’ Carrie Campbell took a shot with 18 seconds remaining giving the Trojans one more chance at taking the lead. Trojans coach Donovan Martin went to Caputo for the possible winner with the guard taking a clean look shot with one second remaining. “It was a designed play for her and that is the person we wanted shooting it,” said Martin. “Every player on the team would have chosen her to take the shot. It was 50-50 chance and it did not happen to fall. We played well defensively and well on the boards but it was turnovers in the first half that killed us.” Cougars coach Joe Enevoldson said that during the third quarter break his team down by four points he told them. ““Just to stay the course in what we want to do and need to do. We had to stay focused on every second.” Kari Youmans paced the Cougars with 17 on 7-10 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 2-4 from the line and 5 boards.         In the other semi, the Grant MacEwan Griffins dumped the Lethbridge Kodiaks 68-59. The undefeated Griffins led by 21 but the Kodiaks rallied to within four down the stretch. “In preseason they beat is 86-43…dominated us,” said Kodiaks coach Avery Harrison. “We have improved that much since then. We could have simply folded up our tent when we were down 21 points. But I told them that we have to get some stops here. We are a team with a lot of character and they didn’t give up. They played right through to the buzzer.” Of getting with four points at a crucial juncture of the game, “We made a couple of bad errors that let the game out of hand for us.” Griffins coach Rob Poole said “there is no pressure (with No. 1 status) as we have waited a long time to be back at this game. Today we went into a bit of a cold spell but fortunately we got out of it at the right time. We may have not shot well (from three-point distance) but as long as you believe that you can make it the next one will go in.” Griffin Emily Sommerville said “it feels awesome. It was a little bit scary but we kept our focus and came through. He (Coach Poole) kept us focused and told us not to panic and keep our cool and play our defence and do what we do.” Emily Somerville paced the Griffins with 16 on 8-13 from the floor and 2 7 boards.         In the final, the Grant MacEwan Griffins capped an undefeated season by smacking the Mount Royal Cougars 89-57 to win their first ACAC title. “I know the program has been consistently strong over the years but this year we had an exceptional group that was focused,” said Griffins coach Rob Poole. “I think the performance we did on defence tonight was a combination of execution and emotion. We were able to get up and put good pressure on the ball.” The Griffins got 41 points off their bench. They led 22-10 after one quarter and 50-22 at the half. “The group that returned and the freshman kids that came in were pretty focused of setting a goal of getting back to that game and when they did get back to that game, they played excellent basketball,” said Poole. “We really hadn’t talked about our win-loss record at any time during the season, it was just about being able to play our best at all times.” Erin MacKinnon said that “we were pretty confident going into the game. We had beaten them by 30 points the last time we played them but we still definitely respected them heading into the final because they are a really good team. We knew we had to come with our best and we felt like we had one of our best games all season. …It’s really cool. I’ve never been a part of something this big. Even winning provincials and getting to cut down the net as a prize, that’s a pretty cool experience.” Cougars coach Joe Enevoldson said “MacEwan is a phenomenal basketball team and they are the best college team I have seen in the last six years. They are so fundamentally sound from top and bottom and I am proud that we battled through to the bitter end.” Erin MacKinnon paced the Griffins with 18 on 6-9 from the floor, 0-2 from the arc and 6-6 from the line.
