The Wolves rallied from a 16-point deficit with eight minutes to play to earn their first title since 1995. “This team has done this sort of thing all year,” said Wolves coach Dave Waknuk. “We’ve been down in games, but the players have this composure you don’t find very often in a college team. We looked at each other in the huddle when we were down a bunch, and we said: ‘We can do this. We’ve done these things before.’ It’s all a credit to character of these players, and the heart of this team, for sure.” Up by four at halftime, MacEwan led 46-37 after three quarters and poured it on early in the fourth with seven straight points to make it 53-37. But the Wolves got those seven points back by the 3:13 mark of the final stanza, put the Griffins back on their heels, and just kept coming. The Griffins missed three key shots in the final minute, and by the time the smoke had cleared, the Wolves had accounted for 26 of the final 32 points scored – and claimed their third ACAC crown in program history. “It was our composure. We kept coming and we kept battling. The biggest thing was, we didn’t quit,” said Waknuk, in his rookie year at the helm. “We attacked every rebound and kept pushing the pace. We never gave up.” Andria Carlyon paced Grande Prairie with 24 on 8-19 from the floor, 8-9 from the line, 10 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals.
