In the quarterfinals, Grant MacEwan d’d Medicine Hat 90-59; 65-61 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In game one, Grant MacEwan whipped Medicine Hat 90-59 after leading 46-29 at the half. The Griffins capitalized heavily on second-chance opportunities and turnovers. “I don’t think they did anything to beat us,” Rattler post Cori Jones told the Medicine Hat News. “We really were our own worst enemy tonight. We had lots of unnecessary turnovers and weren’t boxing out like we usually do, and that cost us the game. They got way too many second, third and even fourth-chance shots.” Rattlers coach Boris Grisonich said “we’re better than the score showed tonight. We were a little frustrated that we didn’t play the

way we can play.” Medicine Hat led 11-4 early but soon folded their tents, trailing 48-29 at the half. “Our rebounding and turnovers killed us … it was horrible,” Grisonich said. “We shot better than them, but we just didn’t get as many

opportunities. MacEwan plays really hard, attacking the glass and boxing out. They just played really aggressively and our girls just didn’t play aggressive enough inside and gave up a lot better shots than we took.” Leanne Theuss led MacEwan with 19. Lindsey Cupelli added 15, Claire Wilson 14, Jill Verhesen 11, Shavaun Reaney 9, Carley Burr 6, Keira Lintz 5, Mallorie Sherman 5, Kaitlin Rempel 4 and Lindsay Cederwall 2. Kelsey Rowntree paced the Rattlers with 21. Cori Jones added 12, Jocelyn Wigmore 7, Jodi Leinweber 7, Jane Jacoby 5, Alyssa Dunn 4, Rebecca Hartshorn 2, Jessica Schmidt 2, and Heather Tulloch 2, while Michelle Keene, Casie Gibson and Kate Carter were scoreless. …………………………………………………… In game two, MacEwan completed the series sweep with a 65-61 win after leading 34-26 at the half. Rattlers coach Boris Grisonich told the Medicine Hat News that the difference was the discrepancy in fouls. “I don’t like to comment on the refs, but I’m not happy that we had five free throw attempts and MacEwan had 28 free throw attempts.” Thirty fouls were called on Medicine Hat, compared to 11 on the Griffins. “There were a ton of fouls and violations that I just don’t understand,” said Grisonich. “After working that hard, I think our girls just deserved a little more respect than that. On average, we’re one of the lowest fouling teams in the province. We’ve got college kids who are outstanding players, so I don’t understand how all of a sudden they’re getting carries and three-in-the-keys and travels on numerous occasions and the other team isn’t.” The Rattlers led 18-17 after one quarter but the Griffins took the lead on a technical against Grisonich for complaining about the officiating. Audra Beardsworth rallied the Rattlers within 51-46 on a putback and Kelsey Rowntree nailed a jumper to make it 55-53 with four minutes to play but the Rattlers got no closer. “I don’t want to take anything away from MacEwan, because they’re a really talented team,” Grisonich said. “We’d have to play our best ball to beat them, and I thought we played pretty close to our best ball tonight and we almost beat them.” Guard Becky Hartshorn was named player of the game for the Rattlers. Shavaun Reaney paced MacEwan with 17. Claire Wilson added 16, Jill Verhesen 11, Mallorie Sherman 8, Leanne Theuss 4, Lindsey Cupelli 3, Kaitlin Rempel 2 and Carley Burr 2, while Lindsay Cederwall was scoreless.
