        During the regular season, Grande Prairie defeated Lethbridge 60-50 but the Wolves used an ineligible player and were forced to forfeit the game, giving the Kodiettes the win, the regular season title and the right to host the final four playoffs. The Wolves were eventually forced to forfeit six games, which gave Camrose Lutheran the final berth in the postseason playoffs.

        In the semis, the Lethbridge Kodiettes pounded the Camrose Lutheran Vikings 87-59. “We had trouble in the first

half,” said Kodiette coach Gary Paynton. “(We) panicked because of the press Camrose threw against us, but once they settled down and broke the press, they played well.” The Vikettes led 8-5 early but the Kodiettes got on track on took a 40-24 lead before the Vikettes rallied within 45-35 at the half. But the Kodiettes quickly pulled away in the second stanza. Donna Layton paced the Kodiettes with 19. Deb Bosch added 17, Karen Sommerfeld 13, Kathryn Brownlee 12 on 6-6 from the floor, Davlyn Last 11 and Cathy Fraser 10. Betty Boettger paced the Vikettes with 17. Verna Mumby added 12 and

Brenda Bohmer 8. The Vikettes also included Mary Niefeld. The Kodiettes hit 33-72 (.460) from the floor and 21-36 (.580) from the line, while the Vikings hit 22-63 (.350) from the floor and 15-30 from the line. “I was pleased with our defence,” said Paynton. “We denied the ball and blocked out really well.” Both teams employed a man-to-man defence, but said Paynton, “We played it a lot better than they did.” Paynton added that post Bev McKeage had good defensive game and rebounded well. “Donna (Layton) played another strong game, and we need that type of scoring from the backcourt. Cathy Fraser did a good job on the zone press She creates a lot of fast break situations by being able to anticipate where the ball is going, and she fed for some nice fast break opportunities.”

        In the other semi, the Mount Royal Kittens swatted the Medicine Hat Kudus 70-42 after leading 40-22 at the half. Deb Askew paced the Kittens with 26 on 12-30 from the floor. Sherri McNally added 10 and Holly Boettger 8. Pam Mann led the Kudus with 15. Janice Hirsch and Dorothy Hirch each added 6. The Kittens hit 28-68 (.410) from the floor and the Kudus 15-62 (.240).

        In the bronze medal match, the Medicine Hat College Kudus clipped the Camrose Lutheran Vikettes 59-49 as Kathy Wiley scored 12, Janice Hirsch 12, Pam Mann 11 and Jane Cameron 11. Brenda Bohmer paced the Vikettes with 18. The Vikettes also included Mary Nelson, Verna Bumby, Ann Faulk, Kelly Stephens, Wanda Wemp, Bett Boettger.

        In the final, the Mount Royal Kittens defeated the Lethbridge Kodiettes 72-61. Kodiettes coach Gary Paynton said “Mount Royal played 40 minutes of ball and we played 38. In those one-minute lapses, they ran up points.” Lethbridge guard Davelyn Last said “there was no team effort and nobody got themselves up for the game.” The Kittens led 38-27 at the half but the Kodiettes rallied within one midway through the second half. The Kittens regained a double-digit lead and withstood all Kodiette charges. “We played 38 minutes of basketball and they played 40 minutes,” said Kodiette coach

Gary Paynton. “We had a couple of one-minute lapses and that’s what cost us the game . . . We lost our intensity and concentration and they capitalized on it.” Sherri McNally paced the Kittens with 24. Deb Askew added 18 and Carolyn Jamison 7. Karen Sommerfeld led the Kodiettes with 17. Kathryn Brownlee added 14, Deb Bosch 11 and Donna Layton 8. Mount Royals hit 30-91 (.330) from the floor and 12-24 from the line, while Lethbridge hit 25-66 (.380) from the floor and 11-27 (.410) from the line, “We were rushing our offence for some reason,” Paynton said. “We just weren’t executing. The guards were calling the play and running into it without the other players being set on the court.”
