In the other semi, the Red Deer Queens dispatched the Camrose Lutheran Vikettes 43-38 as Jan Brassard scored 17, Ann Flewelling 8, Bev Smith 7 and Brenda Dickson 6. Queens coach Barry Dunkley told the Red Deer Advocate “it was our defence that did it. Our shooting wasn’t all that good but we played it tough defensively. Everyone played excellent defence. … We kept them outside.” Georgina Tomkow led the Vikettes with 11. Mona Knudslien added 6, Cookie Pinsky 6 and Beck Ericson 6.

In the bronze medal match, the Mount Royal Cougars dusted the Camrose Lutheran Vikettes 89-49 as Debbie Yanota scored 19, Julie Bevan 14, Ila Faye Turley 12, Kathy Peacock 12 and Lori Craig 12. Georgina Tomkow paced the Vikettes with 12. Mona Knudslien added 12. The Vikettes also included Anita Morck, Yvonne Johnson, Marjorie Moore, Cookie Onsky, Becky Erickson, Grace Herbeir.

In the final, the Red Deer Queens defeated the Medicine Hat Kudus 38-37 as Jan Brassard scored 16 and Dawn Simkin 10. Nora Way led the Kudus with 14. Wendy Lien added 10. Queens coach Barry Dunkley told the Red Deer Advocate that “it was a great effort by everyone. We couldn’t have done it without everyone pulling together and playing as a team. They showed great desire and discipline which in the end was the difference.” Red Deer led 6-0 early and 23-16 at the half. The Kudus took a three-point lead with five minutes to play but Brassard and Simkin hit buckets and the Queens ran the clock down to 15 seconds. A last-second Kudus shot bounced off “both rims,” the Advocate reported. “Red Deer College had all the breaks and we didn’t have any and that’s not to cry sour grapes,” Kudus coach Pat Rawlusyk told the Medicine Hat News. “The game could have gone either way. Red Deer College surprised me as they took only 47 shots and a great many from long distance. I was shocked though when a lot of their long shots went in. Not too many women’s basketball teams can hit so accurately on long shots. The officiating wasn’t the best I’ve seen. For instance, Red Deer College was called for only four fouls while we were lagged with 15. And we truly didn’t deserve any more fouls than they did. We played well against Red Doer College. It was disappointing to lose but the girls have nothing to be ashamed of. They’re a good basketball team and they’ve showed it throughout this season.”
