In the final, the NAIT Ooks edged the Grant MacEwan Griffins 73-69 after leading 34-13, 45-33 and 58-50 at the quarters. Rodel Grenaway hit a trey with 38 seconds to play and the Ooks held on for the win. “We’ve overcome all the hurdles,” said NAIT coach Don Phillips. “All year long, we’ve had some pretty good leads and teams have come back. But we’ve always held our composure. Someone always has stepped up and hit a big shot or had a good defensive stop or whatever we needed to pull through. … I figured all along that we had enough offence to win. The big difference was the effort the team gave when we didn’t have the ball. That, and the depth we have. There were mental lapses at times but when we needed big stops, we got a lot of them.” The Griffins had taken their first lead of the game at 68-66 on a Lyndon Taylor bucket with a minute to play. Griffins coach Ryan Dunkley said “we had a lot more left in us. We just had a bad first quarter and we won every quarter after that. I definitely think we could have contended for the national title this year, so it’s really disappointing. … We had a great bunch of guys. We made it further than most teams in the country. It was a good year but we didn’t accomplish what we set out to do.” Shane Cox paced NAIT with 20 on 7-12 from the floor, 4-7 from the arc, 2-4 from the line and 2 steals.
