In the final, the top-seeded host Red Deer Kings edged the 7th-seeded Concordia Thunder 67-62. “It was electric at the final buzzer,” Kings coach Clayton Pottinger told the Red Deer Advocate. ““With the crowd chanting ‘R-D-C, R-D-C’, I had chills. It was awesome to do this at home, in front of our fans.” Thunder coach Reagan Wood said “we feel lucky and fortunate to get to the finals and it is all the product of the guy’s hard work. The fifth-year players (Jamaal Bucknor, David Shantz, Dallas Wright), the veterans, was the No. 1 factor to getting where we needed to get. They were all close games and it’s not that they are more talented it’s just that they wanted it more knowing that the season would end if they did not get the win.” Without Bucknor for the last five regular season games due to injury, the Thunder had a “wakeup call,” said Wood. “It gave some other guys some opportunity to gain some more experience.” Combined the three veterans contributed 77% of the points scored in the three-game series. “That’s the way our offence works…get the ball to the veterans and trust them to make the right decisions and for the most part they do.” The Thunder led 12-8 after one quarter.
