In the semis, the Mount Royal Cougars defeated the Medicine Hat Rattlers 86-84; 55-61; 56-55 (2g-1). …………………………………………………… In game one, host Mount Royal prevailed 86-84 in double overtime. Despite having had stars Tony Adams and Mark Smith foul out in regulation, the Cougars pulled out the win as Darren Driscoll scored 24, Smith 17 and Bruce Babiuk 11. “We had their two big guys out of the lineup, but we were still tentative in putting the ball inside during overtime. We beat ourselves when we knew we had the chance to win,” Rattlers coach Mike Haven told the Medicine Hat News. “By the same token the officials weren’t going to give either team any breaks inside. You had to be really sure if you were going to stick the ball inside. But besides all that we had opportunities at the free-throw line and with rebounds and we should have had them.” The Cougars led 43-39 at the half. Cougars coach Doug Baker noted that “for a team that works all the time on post defence and interior defence they don’t do it very well. Their player John Cislo really hurt us tonight, but usually he’s a guy who can only score six points. So, you can never tell who’s going to come up big.” Paul Cohee led the Rattlers with 19. Chris Croft added 15. …………………………………………………… In game two, Medicine Hat prevailed 61-55 after rallying from a 27-22 deficit. “We’ve only had limited success beating their inside play the other games we’ve played them this season, but tonight we did a much better job with our zone defence,” Rattlers coach Mike Havey told the Medicine Hat News. Two late steals by Chris Croft and a bucket by John Cislo proved the difference, Havey said. “John’s had pretty good numbers against Mount Royal in this series and in this game, he hit 5-8 from the field and 3-4 from the free-throw line. That’s pretty efficient. The team overall played well and kept the pressure on the Cougars’ shooters throughout. We got a couple of breaks, but by the same token, in the first half we played panicky for about a five-minute stretch where we were stuck at 18 points. We still have young players and so the frustration can be there when the situation gets close.” Cougars coach Doug Baker noted that the “funny thing about playoffs is that you’ll never see one team or one player dominate from one game to another. Medicine Hat looked like they wanted it more. We made stupid mistakes and turned the ball over too many times. We held them to 61 points which is the sort of defence I like to see from my players. Unfortunately, we couldn’t score more and that bothers me.” John Cislo and Chris Croft each scored 13 to pace the Rattlers. Paul Cohee added 11, Lyn Ellefson 9 and Graham Hackl 9. Steve Raben paced the Cougars with 15. Bradley Fay added 12 and Rod Charlton 10. The Rattlers hit 21-54 (.390) from the floor and 16-28 (.690) from the line. The Cougars hit 20-40 from the floor. …………………………………………………… In game three, Mount Royal prevailed 56-55. Rattlers coach Mike Havey told the Medicine Hat News he was “disappointed” but that “we came a long way. Other coaches in this conference didn’t even consider us as a playoff contender. Next year we will be difficult to live with in the ACAC.” Mount Royal led 26-25 at the half. The Rattlers had a chance to force overtime with four seconds remaining but guard Chris Croft missed 1 of 2 free throws. Paul Cohee led the Rattlers with 16. Croft added 12. “I am very disappointed,” said Havey. “We had defensive lapses. That’s not (free throws) when the game was lost. We made a lot of errors.” The Rattlers also included Graham Hackl, John Cislo, Lyn Ellefson, Todd Whitehead, Dean Harrison, Drew Smith, Noel Andreoni, Shane Kopec, Kevin Epgg and Dennis Mytrunec.

In other semi, the Grant MacEwan Griffins defeated the SAIT Trojans 94-90; 77-82; 74-61 (2g-1). …………………………………………………… In game one, Grant MacEwan prevailed 94-90 as Darren Ross scored 29 and Kevin Ottewell 28. Ray Fehr led the Trojans with 23. Lyndon Campbell added 22. …………………………………………………… The Trojans included Rae Fehr, Peter Sambu, Lyndon Campbell, Brian Haynes, Lyle Bruno, Richard Walker, Ross Richardson, Terry Behrans, Stacey Johnson, Gerald Brand, Warren Kerr, Ron Bailey, Steve Snyder, Robert Gorlt and Howard Gardner.
