In the semis, the Lethbridge Kodiaks defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 79-72 as Kevin Reiter scored 29 and Rob Fiorino 22. The Kodiaks shot 47% from the floor and 53% from the line. Steve Doty paced the Cougars with 20. Tony Brown added 11. The Cougars shot 38% from the floor and 74% from the line. Reiter hit his first eight shots. The Kodiaks led 41-40 at the half. The Kodiaks avenged an 82-50 loss to the Cougars in the final game of the regular season. “It was a good game for us. After coming off that 32-point blowout, the kids were wondering if they could do it,” Kodiaks coach Tim Tollestrup told Canadian Press. “We got a good game out of Reiter and Fiorino in the scoring department, and good games defensively out of others like Arnie Bergen-Henengouwen.” Tollestrup added that Cougars foul trouble, particularly Brown and Rob Eudailey were instrumental in the win.
In the other semi, the SAIT Trojans whipped the Medicine Hat Antelopes 81-60 as Bart DeNooy scored 18 and Daryl Turku 14. Brian Vogt led the Antelopes with 16.
In the bronze medal match, the Mount Royal Cougars defeated the Medicine Hat Antelope 91-74 as Tony Brown scored 21. Frank Behrens led the Antelopes with 21. Maurice Ekkebus added 15 and Doug Dirk 13. The Cougars led 53-31 at the half. The Antelope (co-coached by Randy Rainsforth and Pete Meunier) also included Brian Vogt, Frank Behrens, Pat Grisonich, John Campbell, Greg Czech, Brian McCauley, Daryl Stepanic, Roger Dirk, R Thierbach, M Henry and B Kinch.
In the final, the SAIT Trojans defeated the Lethbridge Kodiaks 86-77 after leading 51-38 at the half. Kodiaks coach Tim Tollestrup told The Endeavor that losing league scoring champ Rob Fiorino to an ankle injury in the first half proved the difference. “When we lose him, we lose some scoring punch, which hurt a little bit. We had a small lead but we just couldn’t get our offence pulling for us. We’d bring the ball down the court and just throw it away. We made a lot of turnovers, just poor passing or we would travel with the ball.” Joe MacKinnon paced the Trojans with 17. Nigel Gainor added 16, Bart De Nooy 12 and Darryl Turko 12. Kevin Reiter led the Kodiaks with 32. Ian Kerr added 23. Rob Fiorino had just 4. The Kodiaks shot 36% from the floor and 65% from the line. Tollestrup said “Chris (Kotkas) did a good job of bring the ball up the court, but the pressure was so great on him he started to get tired. SAIT has so many players they can bring off the bench. They were just running them in an out.” Tollestrup added that several of his troops did not respond well to SAIT’s pressure. “Some of our guys just didn’t react to that type of defence.”
