The Ghosts led 53-36 at the half as 16-year-old 6-8 centre Kyle Landry scored 33. But he played timidly with four fouls in the second half as the Zeniths rallied. Losing to the top seed wasn’t bad, Landry told the Calgary Herald. “We weren’t expected to do this well and we proved everyone wrong.” Ghosts coach Kevin O’Neill expected the Zeniths to make a run. “We told the kids to go out and play like it was a tie because Magrath is too good a team to roll over and die.” But Landry’s fouled out and having Peter Pestka foul out with 10 minutes remaining hurt. Still, the Zeniths lost T.J. Quinton, Doug Mehew and 6-8 Joe Schow to fouls, yet their bench proved deeper. Magrath coach Phil Tollestrup said his son Allen “came out and hit some big shots to keep us in the game. We didn’t have good shooting in the first half. But in the second we got momentum.”
The 12th-seeded Taber W.R. Myers Rebels upset the 4th-seeded Calgary Dr. E.P. Scarlett Lancers 98-90 as Henry Bekkering scored 42, Jayson Burrows 19, Brant Hansen 17, Kaleb Bajowa 6, Jeff Bennett 3, Brian Steed 2 and Matt Tudor 1, while Nelson Porter, Jason Kraemer, Nolan Tudor and Ross Bekkering were scoreless. Lloydminster closed the gap to 8 with 3 minutes to play with a 3-4 court press but Ross Sheppard used good ball movement to hold off the Barons.

Brant Hansen added 13, Jayson Burrows 8, Jeff Bennett 4, Brian Steed 2 and Kaleb Bajowa 2, while Nelson Porter, Jason Kraemer, Nolan Tudor, Matt Tudor and Ross Bekkering were scoreless. “Henry was outstanding.” Said Magrath coach Phil Tollestrup. “He’s so quick, and strong. I don’t know how you prepare for him, you sure can’t do it in practice.” The Rebels trailed by 20 early in the second half and Bekkering shot them back into it. “You can never feel safe when
you’re playing against Henry, or Taber,” added Magrath guard Allen Tollestrup. “We know they’re capable of going on some big runs. They do it to us every time we play them.” Tollestrup had hit a pair of treys to make it 47-27 but the Rebels responded with a 14-0 run before post Joe Schow stopped the bleeding with a trey. The Rebels rallied no closer than five down the stretch. “Their big guys stepped up, and Henry stepped up, but our other guys didn’t,” said Myers coach Allen Matthews. “Henry did everything he could, and it seemed the other guys were very content to let him. Our
guys are still very tentative. It was like Henry said ‘I’ll carry you’, and he carried us. Sure, to a seven-point loss, but if it wasn’t for him, they would have spanked us … dearly.” Tollestrup said “we kept hanging tough, up six or eight points down the stretch, we bent but we didn’t break.”
In the other semi, the 6th-seeded Edmonton Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds stunned the 2nd-seeded Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans 79-61 as Andrew Champagnie scored 20, Dave Tron 19, Jamaal Bucknor 18, Onsi Saleh 12, Mark Lupicki 5, Jerome Bingham 2, Dayne Hodge 2 and Drew Hanson 1, while Mark Cembroski, Filip Dundor, Chad Marionchuck, Dale Samaroo and Jared Kevfoot were scoreless. Chris Muchena led Harry Ainlay with 13. Brendon Bjarnason added 2, Tendayi Jozzy 11, Deiter Molcak 10, Hamza Ruhezamihigo 10, Cory Allen 3 and Govind Pandopatam 2, while Andy MacIver, Paul Lali, Ryan Edick, Alain Tchozoyema and David Stone were scoreless. The Thunderbirds led from the start as Andrew Champagnie kept attacking with the penetration dribble. Ross Sheppard led 37-33 at the half. The Thunderbirds increased their lead to as many as 12 in the second half and iced the win at the free throw line. The Titans were whistled for 19 fouls in the second half.
In the bronze medal match, the 12th-seeded Taber W.R. Myers Rebels defeated the 2nd-seeded Edmonton Harry Ainlay Titans 83-79 as Henry Bekkering scored 36 and Brent Hansen 14. The Rebels led 44-34 at the half. Harnza Ruhezamihigo led the Titans with 26. Chris Machena added 12. The Titans (coached by Rob Poole) also included Tendayi Jozzy, Deiter Molcak, Paul Lali, Brendon Bjarnason, Cory Allen, Andy MacIver, Ryan Edick, Govind Pandompatam, Alain Tchozoyema and David Stone.
In the final, the top-seeded Magrath Zeniths stomped the 6th-seeded Edmonton Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds 74-63 as Derek Blackmer scored 22, Riley Sabey 19, T.J. Quinton 13, Doug Mehew 10, Brett Harris 4 and Cam Smith 4, while Giovanni Uneddu, Ryan Clark, Joe Schow, Shane Nishikawa and John Leishman were scoreless. Drew Hanson led Ross Sheppard with 21. Jamaal Bucknor added 15, Andrew Champagnie 10, Dave Tron 10, Onsi Saleh 4 and Mark Lupicki 3, while Mark Cembroski, Filip Dundor, Chad Marionchuck, Jerome Bingham, Dale Samaroo, Dayne Hodge and Jared Kerfoot were scoreless. Ross Sheppard led 31-27 at the half but the Zeniths opened the second frame with a 13-3 run to take command. Drew Hanson hit three treys down the stretch to give Magrath a scare but the Zeniths were never seriously threatened. “It’s just really relaxing,” said Zeniths post Joe Schow. Coach Phil Tollestrup said Schow is “our big man, he’s a big, tough kid and we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have him. He was under a lot of pressure all year but he never let it get to him.” Although the Zeniths struggled early with the zone, “we started to move the ball a little bit better and hit our shots,” Tollestrup said. “We started to spread out their defence a little more and once we hit our shots, we
got some momentum.” Magrath opened the second half with a 13-3 run to take a 40-36 lead as Tollestrup and Schow got on track. “They pulled him out and moved the ball a lot better, especially through the high post,” T-Birds coach Dave Youngs said. “They threw some skip passes through the high post and it opened it up. It’s tough for our kids to match up with a big guy like that and when you do it opens up a lot of other matchups all over the floor.” The T-Birds rallied to a 43-42 lead when Mark Lupicki drained a trey but Sheppard never led again. “I think we just started to open up some shots for everybody,” Schow said. “We talked at half and we knew what we had to do, we just had to work harder.” They took a 54-45 lead on Tollestrup’s third trey. “They made a couple of threes’, Tollestrup got a couple of open shots and then we just got a little bit stagnant on offence,” Youngs said. “We weren’t moving well at all and
that’s when we get caught standing and watching.” The Zeniths iced it with 12 straight at the free throw line before T-Bird Drew Hanson narrowed the final margin with a trio from beyond the arc. “To be here on top is just amazing,” Tollestrup said.
